'Our appointment was for this afternoon, Roger. Not tomorrow, not next week, but today!'

Bree looked up in alarm the moment her employer entered her office, growling into his mobile phone. Wincing, she realised he had to be talking to his two o'clock appointment today, Roger Tyler, a rock star who had become a legend in his own lifetime.

'I don't give a—'

Jerome Jackson Beaumont broke off mid-sentence, checking himself as he realised Bree was an unwilling listener.

'I don't give a—a flying monkey what's "come up", Roger. You asked—no, begged me to do the photo shoot for your next album, so you either get yourself over here this afternoon or forget the whole damn thing!' He listened to the other man's response for about two seconds before interrupting him. 'You have five minutes, Roger, to cancel your date this afternoon with whatever bimbo has caught your attention this time, before ringing me back to say you'll be here at two this afternoon after all!'

He flipped the mobile phone across the desk to Bree who, after almost a year of practice, caught it neatly in the palm of her hand, checking that Jackson had indeed ended the call—something he had a habit of forgetting to do, often exposing the unfortunate caller to the expletive-filled aftermath, before giving him a reproving glance.

She remembered when she'd first met him. 'Just call me Jackson,' he had ordered Bree when she'd come to work for him a year ago. 'Not Jerome, never, ever Beau or Mr Beaumont, but Jackson.'

'I really wish you would let me deal with all the incoming calls.' She had unfortunately missed this particular call because of a two-minute visit to the bathroom!

Jackson gave an unrepentant grin as he leaned against the side of her desk. 'I can't imagine why!'

And really neither could Bree; this man seemed to be able to insult people, be rude to them, even totally ignore them and still they came back for more!

Because he was Jerome Jackson Beaumont, world-renowned photographer, whose work hung on the walls of royal palaces as well as in galleries all over the world. What was a little rudeness, the odd insult, a snub or two, when in the end you could own an original Jerome Jackson Beaumont?

The way he looked didn't do him any harm either—especially where women were concerned. Six feet two inches of lean, tanned muscle, emphasised by the fitted T-shirts and denims he habitually wore—a blue T-shirt today, and black jeans—with eyes as clear and blue as the sky on a cloudless summer's day, strong, high cheekbones, a sharp blade of a nose, and a mouth that was so wickedly sensual it should have a warning label attached to it.

As if that wasn't enough Jackson had long silky hair that reached almost to his shoulders in a raggedly windswept style, and it was the colour of golden honey and molasses—neither gold nor brown but somewhere in between—the same burnt-sugar colour that women paid hundreds of pounds to achieve in exclusive salons all around the world!

Within minutes of meeting Jackson for the first time Bree had realised he was exactly as everyone described. Unique. A perfectionist. And utterly brilliant. He was also, she had registered in those same few minutes, totally and utterly impossible!

She had heard the rumours, of course—who hadn't read about the eccentricities of Jerome Jackson Beaumont in the gossip columns of every newspaper? The employment agency had warned her too, telling her of the three other assistants they had sent to him in the previous month, two of whom had returned as gibbering emotional wrecks, and the third of whom had not come back at all.

Bree had taken those warnings in her stride. The job not only paid well, but also offered immediate rent-free occupation of the self-contained basement flat beneath the London mansion where Jerome Jackson Beaumont lived and worked. For Bree, who had been homeless at the time, the apartment had provided her with more than enough incentive to make up her own mind about her notorious new boss.

Yes, Bree had very quickly discovered Jerome Jackson Beaumont to be every bit as arrogant and impossible to work with as people had warned. With one exception.

His six-year-old son, Daniel.

Considering Jackson had never been married, Danny's mother remained something of a mystery. A mystery Jackson had repeatedly refused to shed light on when questioned by members of the press about the one-year-old son he had brought to live with him five years ago.

As the woman was obviously no longer present in either Jackson's or Danny's life, her identity didn't affect Bree on a day-to-day basis. That didn't mean Bree didn't feel a certain curiosity about her—mainly because Bree wondered how any woman could have just handed her son over to his father like that. Especially when that father was the charismatic Jerome Jackson Beaumont!

Danny was tall for his age, with hair of corn-gold, eyes the same clear blue as his father's, and a sweetly mischievous disposition. And he was, without a doubt, his father's one saving grace.

Bree had fallen in love with him on the very first day she'd come to work at Beaumont House.

The son, not the father.

She had already paid—and paid dearly—for loving the wrong man, and had no intention of repeating that painful experience!

This had turned out to be a wise decision, considering there had been legions of women flitting in and then quickly out of Jackson's life over the past year. Redheads, blondes, brunettes, and every shade in between—all of them tall and beautiful.

Bree knew there was no danger of Jackson ever seeing her as anything more than his capable assistant: she was only a little over five feet tall, passably pretty rather than beautiful, and had a slender figure that men found all too easy to dismiss—something Bree knew only too well after her engagement had come to a traumatic end just over a year ago.

Just over a year ago…?

Oh, God! What was the date? Surely it couldn't be—?

It was, Bree realised heavily, the colour draining from her cheeks.

'You aren't really concerned about my conversation with Roger Tyler, are you?' Jackson frowned down at his assistant as he noticed her face growing paler.

Bree blinked before looking up at him.

'Not if you aren't, no,' she dismissed in her usual brisk, no-nonsense tone.

Jackson was always taken by surprise by Bree's long dark lashes and smoky-grey eyes: remarkable eyes in an otherwise unremarkable face. Bree had a smooth brow, with a smattering of freckles on her cheeks and over the bridge of her nose, and a mouth that was usually thinned in disapproval above a small but determined chin. Her hair was the rich blue-black of ebony, but as it was always scraped back and secured with a clasp on the crown of her head even after a year Jackson had no idea as to its length.

He didn't want to know either. Jackson had made a point of never taking a personal interest in any of the women who had been his assistants over the years—much to the annoyance of some, he acknowledged ruefully.

But not Bree. At twenty-six years of age, Sabrina Jones was cool, calm and totally unflappable. From the beginning she had made it absolutely clear that she had no personal interest in him either. Which was probably the reason they had lived and worked together so harmoniously for almost a year now. Put just one little spark of sexual intent or innuendo into that mix and the whole thing would fall apart. And as Bree was the best personal assistant Jackson had ever had, as well as being only too happy to sit with Danny in the evenings if Jackson wanted to go out, he had no intention of stepping over that line. Even if that steady calmness of hers did occasionally tempt him to do something to shake her out of her cool complacency!

'I wouldn't waste my time worrying about a man like Tyler,' Jackson replied drily, standing up to snag his leather jacket from the peg on the wall on his way to the door.

'Where are you going?' Bree demanded as he shrugged into the jacket.

Jackson straightened. 'Out.'

'What about your appointment with Mr Tyler?'

He raised a mocking brow. 'What about it?'

'He's due at the studio in just over an hour,' she pointed out impatiently.

Jackson gave an indifferent shrug. 'When he phones back in a couple of minutes, reschedule him for some time after Christmas.'

'But you just told him to cancel his other engagement so that he could make this afternoon's appointment with you,' Bree pressed.

Jackson grinned unabashedly. 'Sometimes greatness needs reminding that not everyone is here to jump at its beck and call.'

Bree breathed deeply. 'I believe that statement could just as easily apply to you!'

He gave it some thought. 'You're right, it could.' He finally nodded in agreement.

'And?'

'And I'm flattered that you think I'm great, Bree,' he drawled mockingly.

Bree's eyes narrowed. 'Is it my imagination, or are you actually more impossible than usual this morning?'

Jackson grimaced. 'I probably am,' he admitted ruefully. 'Danny and I called on my mother last night to deliver her Christmas presents before she leaves for her Caribbean cruise later today.'

'Oh.' Bree's brow cleared as understanding dawned on her: Jackson and his widowed mother, Clarissa Beaumont, had a way of rubbing each other up the wrong way.

Tall, blonde-haired and blue-eyed, Clarissa was a classical beauty who'd had cosmetic surgery in the past, and now received regular Botox injections. As a consequence Clarissa looked no older now than she had when the photographs in Jackson's study had been taken—when he and his sister, Jocelyn, were small children. Jocelyn had died several years before Bree came to work for Jackson, so she had never met her, but if Jocelyn were still alive she and her mother could probably have passed for sisters!

'Exactly.' Jackson grimaced. 'For some reason Danny's present wasn't ready last night, so she's calling round with it on her way to the airport in.' he looked down at the slim gold watch around his wrist '…oh, half an hour or so.'

'Which is precisely the reason you've decided to go out,' Bree concluded drily.

'Which is definitely the reason I'm going out.' Jackson looked completely unperturbed by her astuteness. 'Seeing my delightful mother twice in as many days is asking too much of any man! Especially as she'll have the latest pretty-boy hanger-on with her today,' he added scathingly. 'Although I do believe this one may be marginally older than me!'

Bree's expression lightened as she resisted the urge to smile at Jackson's look of total disgust. Clarissa Beaumont had been left a very wealthy widow when Jackson's father had died twenty years ago, allowing her to flit around the world from one social engagement to the next, usually with a handsome young man half her age in tow. In the past year Bree had seen the older woman accompanied by at least half a dozen or so such young men.

Much to Jackson's obvious disgust.

'Just stick the present under the tree with all the others when it arrives,' Jackson told her dismissively. 'I'll be back in a couple of hours.'

'You really are—' Bree broke off her accusation as the mobile on her desk began to ring.

'That'll be Tyler,' Jackson predicted, grinning. 'So you'll have to save any more compliments for me until later!'

'As if!' Bree snorted as she picked up the mobile, ready to take the call. 'Make sure you don't forget to collect Danny from school at three-thirty.'

'Yes, ma'am!' Jackson straightened to give her a salute. 'And good luck with my mother,' he added tauntingly as he disappeared through the door.

Bree sighed in exasperation before taking the call, with an apology for Jackson's unpredictable behaviour at the ready. As usual.

'What the hell is that?'

Bree glanced up at an astounded Jackson, standing in the doorway of the main sitting room at Beaumont House. He was staring across at her in horrified disbelief.

'Well, correct me if I'm wrong,' she quipped, 'but it looks like a puppy to me.'

'Very funny.' The scowl on Jackson's brow deepened as he stepped into the room, where Bree sat in front of the log fire, playing with a small dark grey and white bundle of fur and a ball of wool. 'What I want to know is what it's doing here? I'm sure I told you I didn't allow pets when you first came to work for me!'

'You did, yes,' she confirmed nonchalantly.

'Well?' Jackson prompted impatiently.

Bree smiled, raising a rueful eyebrow. 'You obviously forgot to mention that particular house rule to your mother.'

'My mother? What the hell does she—' Jackson stared down in horror at the mischievous puppy. 'No… She wouldn't. She didn't!'

'Oh, I think you'll find she would and she did,' Bree retorted, picking up the puppy as she rose to her feet. 'Come and meet Danny's Christmas present.'

Jackson made no effort to go anywhere near the puppy Bree held in her arms.

'Has my mother gone completely insane? I can't have a puppy here, chewing up the furniture and causing mayhem amongst my photographic equipment!'

'I think your protest may be a little too late, given that he's here already,' Bree teased.

'No! No way am I having a dog.' Jackson gave a determined shake of his head. 'It will have to go back to wherever it came from,' he announced firmly. 'And before I collect Danny from school,' he added with grim finality.

'I have no idea which breeder your mother purchased the puppy from, and as she's currently on her way to the Caribbean to join her cruise ship I don't see how we're going to find out, either.'

Bree held the puppy protectively against her chest. She had already grown fond of the fluffy little thing in the hour since Clarissa Beaumont had breezed in, deposited it into Bree's arms and breezed out again with a casual 'Merry Christmas' once informed that her son wasn't at home. The latest 'pretty-boy hanger-on' had deposited all the paraphernalia a young puppy would need in the entrance hall before quickly following her.

'Of all the irresponsible—! I'll call her on her mobile,' Jackson reasoned evenly as he formulated the plan in his head. 'Then while I'm collecting Danny from school you can drive the puppy back to the breeder—'

'Oh, I couldn't do that!' Bree interrupted in protest, gazing down adoringly at the puppy. 'Why don't you just hold him for a moment, Jackson?'

'No!' He backed away, hands raised defensively as she held the puppy out to him.

'But he's so cute!'

'All puppies are cute, Bree,' Jackson said briskly. 'It's what they grow up into that's the worrying part. And from the look of those paws he's going to be big!'

'Your mother said he's a Bearded Collie,' Bree mentioned absently as she stroked the puppy's ears.

'Big,' Jackson announced disgustedly as he pictured the fully grown dog. 'And not only big, but I believe the breed is slightly insane too. Nope, he's going back. And the sooner the better!'

Bree gave him an aggrieved look. 'Danny would love to have a puppy to play with.' She used the 'D' word unashamedly, knowing that although Jackson could be impossibly arrogant and selfish he had absolutely no defences against anything that might bring pleasure to his motherless son.

As expected, the statement made him pause for thought—if only briefly.

'No,' Jackson stated finally. 'I draw the line at a puppy.' 'But—'

'Bree, it's going to need taking out to the garden to pee.' He glared at her exasperatedly. 'Constantly, if I don't want little puddles all over the house! And feeding. And numerous trips to the vet for its vaccination shots. And—'

'Your mother said he's completely house-trained and up-to-date on his vaccinations,' she put in quickly. 'And I'll do all those other things if you don't want to do them.'

'I don't want a puppy!' he repeated emphatically. 'Besides which, who's going to be answering the phone and all those other numerous jobs you do for me every day while you're outside in the garden or at the vet's? Who's going to look after it all day while Danny is at school?'

Cute three stories
By Rhonda
4 STARS

This is a cute three stories dealing with Christmas and puppies. It almost makes you want to go out and get a puppy. But I will resist because one dog is asleep on my bed and one on the floor by my bed and no kids around anymore just their pets.

The first two stories have cute puppies that you see interact with their new families. The third is a little different as they are wild African puppies in a zoo. Not for cuddling.

They are short novellas. I liked them but they are short. They also have love scenes that I skimmed over. They fall in love in a short amount of time or realize it in fast amount of time.

On the Secretary's Christmas List by Carole Mortimer

Bree has worked for Jackson and lived in apartment in basement of his house for a year. During that year she has seen Jackson date a lot of woman. They keep their personal life separate except for tending his son once in awhile.
Jackson is spoilt, talented and never dates employees. All of a sudden their is a change and Bree is starting to date. Jackson than opens his eyes and starts to see Bree.
Jackson has a cute son and his mom drops the puppy off for a Christmas present while he is out.

The Soldier, the Puppy and Me by Myrna Mackenzie
Trey McFadden is talked into coming back to his hometown and being the Grand Marshall for the Christmas festival. He has not been back home since he turned 18 and joined the military.
He did not have good home life. He has to deal with his memories and be positive symbol for his hometown.
Ella the girl next door is caring for Fizz a puppy for Christmas for local shelter. She is also helping with the festival. Ella's family is gone. She loves her town and wants to help them get through tough times.
Fizz is cute and tries to bring them together, while they fight it.

The Patter of Paws at Christmas by Nikki Logan
Ingrid and Gabriel are taking watch at the zoo over Christmas. The wild dogs have puppies and they are waiting for the puppies to come out of the den. So they can give them shots, tag them and make sure they are healthy.
They were a couple for a brief time. They both have insecurities that their families helped them get. They fight their feelings as they watch for the puppies.

For three short stories they are good. They bring smiles on your face as you read about the animals and holidays.
I was given this ebook to read and asked to give honest review of them by Netgalley and Harlequin.

Fun Anthology
By Janet
This was a fun 3 book anthology from three very talented writers. I am an animal lover, so the cover grabbed me from the first. The combination of puppies/dogs (even feral dogs) and the Holidays brings a smile, and so did all three of the stories. I would not sit down and read them in one sitting, because they could become overwhelming. Just keep the book around for a quick getaway/escape read during the Holidays.
*I received my copy from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.

Who wouldn't want a puppy for Christmas?
By Bitten By Love
I loved this book on so many levels. I mean how can you go wrong with sexy men being brought down by puppies at Christmas time. This book is a collection of three stories dealing with puppies and falling in love at Christmas time. It was like the puppies drew everyone together and made them connect, kinda like a fairy tale. I recommend this book for anyone that still believes in the magic of Christmas and that a dog's kiss can make all your hurts go away.

A quick, entertaining read from a beloved author!
By Donna K.
I really enjoyed this sweet story. The protagonists were likable characters who interacted with each other in a kind and loving way that I appreciated. I liked that how their courtship developed slowly through monthly letters, so while their marriage seemed rushed, they had already built the foundation for it over the past year.

(From the back cover: That sparkly New year's Eve in vegas, dignified Judge James Wilkens impulsively rescued a most seductive damsel in distress. One unforgettable night with Summer Lawton had him vowing to meet her at the same time, in the same place, next year.

But even twice was not enough. So sober James impulsively made free-spirited Summer his wife. With all the odds against his sudden breathless love, would James still be kissing Summer at the same time next year?)

Great Specific Tips with Quick Access and Low Price
By Bill McN.
Waldman's latest e-book delivers a lot of value, especially at the low digital price. His insights on using LinkedIn - a very powerful tool in the right hands - are so specific, they are amazingly useful. Some, in retrospect, seem obvious: If you are looking for an executive job, link to executive search consultants in your alumni, etc., networks. But how many of us would do that without having it pointed out to us? That's the value of a book like this.
This book is also completely current, and includes all LinkedIn's latest tweaks.
How to Find Jobs on LinkedIn comes with Waldman's usual collection of typos, etc., but the underlying advice makes that irrelevant. Compred to higher-priced books on paper, my advice is start here - then reach for the others to fill in gaps.

I strongly recommend this book for those in job search and especially endorse it for those who think they can't mater LinkedIn.
By Rita Carey
This book systematically takes the job seeker through reasonable and "doable" steps for optimizing LinkedIn. Once LinkedIn basic functions have been accessed and a familiarity with the functions is in place, it's time for the person in career transition to take initiatives that will attract others to their profiles. Mr. Waldman clearly shows how to do that and does so in a way that makes it doable, even for those who describe themselves as non-technical. I share his information, and show this book, in my workshops and with my coaching clients who are making midlife career changes.I feel fortunate to have happened upon this material.

Shakespeare?

This book is what it purports to be. The writings of Edward de Vere. He was a pretty good writer, but this is the best argument that he didn't write Shakespeare, at least not alone.

Elwood House: Must-Do list—Monday

• Meet up with Kate and Amber to finalise Amber's wedding—do NOT let Kate talk you into fuchsia or satin—walk away from the satin.

• Decide on classical music pieces for the bathrooms.

• Be ready to fend off that very persistent new wine merchant.

• Stay in for the garden centre delivery of the spiral box trees for the front porch.

'Snow. I am going to need lots of snow. And tiny white fairy lights sparkling in the trees and over the pergola. Can you do fairy lights?' Amber's voice tailed off into a dreamy whisper. 'It would be so magical and romantic.'

Saskia Elwood rolled her eyes and grinned at her best friend Amber, then clicked in the box next to the garden lighting option on her wedding planner spreadsheet.

'Of course I can do white fairy lights. As for the snow? That shouldn't be too difficult for New Year's Day in London. But, you know me, if you want it to snow on your wedding day, then snow you shall have, even if I have to track down a snow gun machine and make you some. Although… Won't it be a bit cold? From the designs I have seen, that dress Kate is making for you would be perfect for a tropical beach wedding—but London in January? Brr…'

Amber giggled and flicked her long straight blonde hair over one shoulder in a move she had perfected in fashion shoots and as years performing as a concert pianist. 'I know,' she replied, wrinkling up her nose in delight. 'It is so perfect. Sam is going to love it.' Then she sighed out loud and strolled out past Saskia and through the conservatory into the garden with a faraway expression on her face. 'Just love it.'

'She's off again,' a cheery voice sounded from behind Saskia's shoulder as Kate Lovat bounced into the room with a bundle of wedding magazines in her arms. 'Dreaming of the fabulous Sam. If I wasn't so smitten with my Heath I would find it a bit sickening. In fact, sometimes I'm surprised you put up with the two of us. Always talking about the lucky men who we have agreed to marry one day.'

'Right now,' Saskia replied with a snort, 'I am more worried about Amber getting frostbite in that skimpy, mostly backless dress you are planning for a winter wedding. Any chance of a jacket? Thermal vest? The poor girl is going to be blue, which is not a good look for any bride.'

Kate replied by playfully hitting Saskia on the head with a rolled up bridal magazine and sat down next to her at the conservatory table. 'Blue? With that fabulous suntan? No chance.' Then she relaxed and rested her elbows on the table. 'Relax. There is a beautiful full-length quilted ivory coat to go on top of that slinky dress for any outdoor photos. Fear not. The girl shall not freeze. When the dancing starts she will be glad of that layered silk gown, even if the beads will be flying everywhere.'

Kate arched her eyebrows and peered at Saskia's computer screen, her green eyes bright with amusement. 'Does that say dinner and reception for twenty-six? I thought this was just going to be a small family wedding. As in no professional musicians, fashion models or anybody else in Amber's world who will make us feel totally inadequate as human beings.'

Saskia laughed out loud and started counting out on her fingers. 'How could you forget Amber's first dad and his huge new stepfamily, her second dad Charles Sheridan—' she pointed towards Kate, who waved a magazine in the air '—with Heath and his new family. Her third dad might bring his new wife but she is having some "freshening up" surgery post-Christmas and might not have the stitches out in time. Oh, and her mum, of course. Julia is bringing the latest beau plus entourage, including her aunt and three American cousins and…' the air whooshed out of Saskia's lungs '…twenty-six hungry, cold people are going to celebrate the best wedding they have ever been to. Amber's friend Parvita and her husband are looking after the music and I booked the waiting staff last week. All I have to do is enjoy myself.'

'Um. Yeah. Right,' Kate replied and looked over the top of her spectacles at her. 'And exhaust yourself in the process of getting everything ready up front so it looks easy on the day. Who is kidding who here? We know you far too well, girl.' Kate smiled and gave her a one-armed hug. 'Now, let me see that list again. Aha. Thought so. You have missed out a crucial item. Tut tut.'

'What?' Saskia glanced at the screen in disbelief and then back to Kate. 'I spent most of my Sunday double-checking the plan. Out with it. What have I missed?'

Kate slid out of her chair and came around to stand in front of Saskia. 'Wedding date for a very picky hostess to be provided by her pals. Tall, dark and handsome. Dancing skills an advantage but will settle for extra hot. And you're not typing that in.'

Saskia sat back in her chair and lifted both hands into the air. 'Trust you to find me a date? Oh no. I still remember that graphic designer who offered to paint my portrait if I stripped down to earrings and a cheeky grin.'

Kate fluttered her eyelashes and tugged down the hem of her perfectly fitted jacket over her petite curves. 'We do such good work.'

Saskia snorted and turned back to the laptop. 'Thank you for the offer but the last thing I want is a boyfriend. You do know that this is the first wedding that Elwood House has ever seen, so no pressure at all.'

Kate waved her arms around and then cocked her head on one side and pushed out her lips. 'This house is gorgeous and that curvy staircase was made for a bride to walk down on her father's arm. It is going to be fabulous, even if we do feel guilty about leaving you to do most of the work.'

Saskia took a breath then shrugged off the lingering disquiet by tapping her wristwatch with her home-manicured fingertip.

'And I feel bad that I am making you late for your sexy lingerie fitting appointment. You know, the one that you booked three weeks ago.' She waggled her fingertips at Kate. 'Go. A new wine merchant and his sales team will be here soon and the last thing they want to see are you two drooling over wedding brochures. Scoot. And have a great time!'

Kate gasped, whooped, flung the magazines onto the table and ran out to grab hold of Amber's arm. Two minutes later all that was left of Amber and Kate were empty coffee cups and plates, a whiff of couture perfume, lipstick on her cheek and a smile on Saskia's face that only spending breakfast with her two best friends in the world could bring.

They had known each other since high school. Totally different in every way and yet she could not want better pals. They might only have reconnected at a high school reunion that May, but now it felt as though they had never been apart.

Had it only been May? Wow. So much had happened in the past few months. Amber was engaged to Sam and spending most of her time living the dream in India, while Kate was sharing her home with Amber's stepbrother Heath only a few streets away. They were both so happy…and off to be fitted with sexy lingerie by the most famous bra shop in London.

Suddenly the wedding planning spreadsheet lost its appeal and Saskia sniffed and sat back in her chair. She envied them the luxury of having time to spend comparing fine lingerie, while she was sitting here trying to decide on whether to have background music in the bathrooms. Or not.

Ah. The joys of running your home as a private meeting venue.

A whisper of self-pity flitted into her mind but she instantly pushed it to the back of her brain in disgust.

She had so much to be grateful for. Her friends Kate and Amber were the perfect pretend family who knew her a lot better than her absent parents. And then she had her home, Elwood House the architectural masterpiece which she had shared with her Aunt Margot until last year.

A gentle breeze wafted in from the garden outside the conservatory room and Saskia smiled out at the hardwood planters overflowing with autumn blossoms.

She had spent so many summer evenings with her aunt in this very room, talking and talking about their grand plan to transform Elwood House into a fabulous private dining venue. Her aunt had been the acclaimed wine expert with superb taste in interior design who was happy to leave Saskia to work on the details and business plans. Together they had been a genius team who had started the project together.

It was so sad that her aunt had never seen those plans come to fruition.

Shuffling to her feet, Saskia gathered up the breakfast dishes and loaded the dishwasher. Clasping hold of the marble worktop, she let her arms take the weight and closed her eyes for a second and took a couple of breaths.

The past six months had been harder than she had expected.

A lot harder and much more expensive. But she could not think like that. She had to make her home into a successful business because the alternative was too terrible to think about. A day job in the city would not come close to meeting the running expenses of a house this size.

Elwood House had been the home of the most famous wine merchants in London for over one hundred and fifty years. It was strange to think that she was the last in the line and responsible for preserving the heritage of the house the first of the Elwood clan had built in this smart part of London.

It was her safety net. Her home. Her sanctuary. And her security.

Saskia inhaled deeply and waggled her shoulders to release the tension.

No matter what it took or how many hours she had to work, Elwood House was going to pay for itself.

Patience. That was what she needed. Patience and a lot of new bookings.

She had only been going a few months and it took time to get a private meeting venue like hers off the ground. Reputation spread by word of mouth and she was already attracting repeat clients, but it was a mightily slow process and she had a big gap to fill before the Christmas party season started. Maybe Amber's wedding would turn things around and she could start the New Year with hope and excitement burning in her heart?

And as for a date for Amber's wedding? That was so not going to happen. She had served meals and coffee to an awful lot of businessmen over the past few months but she had not the slightest interest in dating any of them. Just the opposite. She had learnt the hard way the cost of giving up your independence and she had no intention of repeating her mother's mistake any time soon.

Her gaze fell onto one of the wedding magazines that Kate had brought for Amber to look at and a headline on the cover leapt out at her.

Read all about the huge rise in Civil weddings at home. Celebrate your wedding in the intimate and private venue of your own home.

A spark of an idea flashed bright. Civil weddings. Now that was a thought. Amber's wedding might be the first wedding reception that Elwood House had seen. But it need not be the last… Um… Perhaps there was a market for small private house weddings in a city this size. Not everyone wanted an extravaganza of a huge hotel banqueting suite.

The idea was still rattling around inside her head a few minutes later when the telephone rang. Saskia barely had a chance to pick up the handset and say the words 'Elwood House,' before a transatlantic female voice belted out down the line at such a rapid-fire pace that she had to hold the phone away from her ear for a second.

'Oh, good morning, Angela. Yes, I am still available to talk to Mr Burgess and his team today. Not a problem at all. And there has been a change to the agenda. Right. Have you got the details? Tell me everything.'

Rick Burgess leant his elbows on the solid white railings of Waterloo Bridge and watched the water taxis mooring at the jetty below. The River Thames flowed beneath his feet and wound in wide lazy curves eastwards towards the sea. Stretched out across the horizon in front of him, high-rise marvels of modern architecture reached tall into the sky against the backdrop of landmark ancient cathedrals and majestic stone buildings that made up the city of London.

A fresh breeze wafted up the river and Rick inhaled deeply, his chest rising under his white open-necked shirt and soft black leather biker jacket.

Fresh air.

Just what he needed to clear his head after being cooped up inside an aircraft and then underground trains for the past four hours.

He ran his fingers back through his tousled dark brown hair.

Yesterday he had spent the afternoon talking wine over a plate of antipasti in a sunlit garden on a Tuscan estate with a young Italian couple who had sold everything they had to buy a tiny prestigious vineyard that he knew would be taking the world by storm in time. And today he was in London under a cloudy sky with only patches of blue peeking through to lighten the grey stone buildings.

He knew exactly where he preferred to be and it certainly was not here!

It was on mornings like this that it hit more powerfully than ever that it should be his older brother Tom who should be getting ready to go into a crucial sales meeting with one of the most prestigious private dining venues in London. Not him.

Tom had been the businessman. The IT genius who had transformed a small chain of family wine shops into Burgess Wine, the largest online wine merchant on the West Coast of America.

Rick shook his head and chuckled. He had a pretty good idea of what Tom would've said about the crazy enterprise he was just about to launch in this city and the language would not be fit for his parents to hear.

Tom had been a conservative businessman to the core. He would never have taken a risk with a group of independent young winemakers making tiny amounts of wine on family estates across Europe.

Not all of the wine was remarkable yet. But some of it was amazing.

It was going to have to be if he had any chance at all of redeeming himself in the eyes of the media. As far as the wine trade press were concerned, Rick had certainly never earned his place on the board of directors of Burgess Wine. Far from it.

To them, Rick Burgess would always be every bit the renegade who had walked away from a job with the family wine business to become a professional extreme sports personality. What did he know about the modern wine trade? And they were right.

If Tom was still alive his business ambitions would have stayed in the world he knew—professional sports and adventure tourism. They had always been his passion and still were.

But Tom was dead. And there was nothing he could do to bring him back.

Just like he couldn't change that fact that his parents were both in their sixties and needed him to take Tom's place and work for Burgess Wine.

It had never been his decision or his choice. But as they said, there was nobody else. Burgess Wine was a family business and he had just been promoted to the son and heir whether he wanted the job or not.

Mostly not.

He didn't like it. They didn't like it. And they still didn't completely trust him not to mess things up or run back to his old life.

Emotional blackmail only went so far.

In Blame It on the Champagne by Nina Harrington, Rick Burgess has left an action and award filled career as an adventure sportsman to become a wine merchant after his brother's Tom death. He needs investment for one of his business ventures from the Elwood brothers, one of the oldest and reputed families in winemaking to get credibility from wine experts. Rick will do anything to make his latest business venture a success and if Elwood Brothers are the key to his success then he will do anything to get the company on his side.

Saskia Elwood is the sole owner of her family estate, Elwood house after her aunt's death and has slaved for years to turn her family estate into London's most exclusive venue. Her family had been involved in winemaking for centuries and was quite reputed for the same. Saskia ia the last of her family's line and does not know anything about winemaking. So it is natural to reject Rick's offer and stay clear of any business proposition that would be just plain foolish. Then why has her sexy business partner swept her off to Europe for intimate champagne and why is it getting difficult to resist his charm day by day..??

Blame It on the Champagne by Nina Harrington was a well written and cute story. The characters were good and likable, though I did find Rick a little arrogant in some situations. Saskia does not believe in love because of her lousy father and her irresponsible mother. Though she was a good heroine overall, I could not understand how there was so little resistance on her part to fly to Europe with a man she had just met.

This book is a part of a trilogy, but it can be read as a stand alone. Though the story was good, it was missing the romance factor for me because the characters did not have any chemistry between them. The conversations between them were good, the outdoor locations were gorgeous and the story was a pleasant read but it got a bit boring because of the limited romance and chemistry.

Overall Blame It on the Champagne by Nina Harrington is a well written pleasant read but does not fit in the category of KISS for me because the romance was not fun or sassy enough for me.

Where was the romance?
By Kktexas
This book was worse than the first. All improvements made in book 2 disappeared in this one. I didn't care about the hero and heroine in this story. They had no chemistry and I couldn't wait to finish.

Loved it!

The last of the girls has finally found her 'Mr. Wonderful. Saskia finally has her Elwood House ready for Amber's wedding. Rick, a wine merchant wants to have the Elwood name connected to his new wine store in London and has to sell the non-trusting Saskia on depending on small, unknown suppliers. This calls for a trip to Europe to meet said suppliers and to convince her to trust him.

Good story line and the book was very enjoyable! I really enjoyed all three books involved!!!
