Quick read, very good summary of Sir Alfred's great career

This was a better read than what I had expected for a very
reasonable price. It lead me to read other books about the great
director like: "Hitchcock and the making of Psycho" and
another book about "Vertigo". I recommend it.

Pre-Wedding Mayhem and Second Chance Romance- Okay Read

A Bridezilla, a serious of seeming accidents, backstabbing bridesmaids, and an ex who suddenly reappears at the bachelorette party sounded all sorts of fun to me so I leaped at the chance to read this one.

The story opens with Angie Lawson reluctantly attending the bachelorette party of her best friend's bride to be and just wishing it was all over. The cutting words because she doesn't fit in with all the girly girls, two of the bridesmaids can't stand each other's guts, and the bride's moods and dictates driving everyone crazy and the strip club is so not Angie's thing. Then she can't believe her eyes. The ex that broke her heart and left her over a year ago making it clear that her confident, aggressive bedroom manner and her less than feminine looks and behavior drove him away, is one of the strippers and he has his sights set on a lap dance with Angie.

Cole Foster is undercover trying to dig up information on one of the bridesmaids. He has had them under surveillance so he is well aware that Angie is part of the group. He needs to be close to the wedding party and Angie is the only way he can do it though if he was honest, he just wants to be close to Angie again. She's the only woman he'll ever love, but he can't be with her because once she got to know the real him, she'd dump him anyway.

Angie reluctantly agrees to help Cole and as she feared, it stirs up her tamped down emotions again. She still loves him, but its not enough and Cole still hesitates to trust Angie with the truth about his past. Meanwhile, deadly accidents are happening within the wedding party and Angie may be on that list as well.

Okay. That is the word I would use for this story. I couldn't get into it. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't very engaging for me either. There was some humor to it all though the antics generally fell on the heavy-handed side for me.

The group of characters did not endear themselves to me. Cole and Angie were both pretty insecure and made a habit out of misreading words and motives. I just didn't get into them. I will say that I was a bit intrigued by Cole since he is one of those rare beta heroes. I didn't hold that against him and actually don't mind that type personality for a change. Angie's dominant nature wasn't a problem either. It was just the back and forth stuff that got old.

Then there were Angie's so called friends. Her best friend let his awful bride (he lost points right there marrying that beastly woman) rip Angie a new one when he knew she didn't deserve it. That's one of the most distracting things about the story- that wedding. It totally upstaged the romance plot much of the time. I was so distracted by the thought of anyone marrying the nightmare bride, Brittany and I honestly couldn't figure out why all those people jumped through the fiery hoops over alligator infested waters for her. By all rights, she should have been left alone with her signature pink bubblegum Brittini drink to hopefully get plastered and mellow.

All in all, its an okay read that had its funny moments, its sexy times and offered a second chance romance for two tentative people.

Sensual and engaging

When her best friend gets engaged, Angie Lawson finds herself in wedding hell. Between a diva bride, two backstabbing bridesmaids, a controlling assistant, and more events than you could shake a stick at, Angie's one step away from stabbing herself with Bridezilla's stilettos. Just when she thinks things can't get any worse, Angie's ex-boyfriend shows up at the bachelorette party...as a stripper.

Breaking up with Angie was the hardest thing Cole Foster has ever done, but he knows she deserves better than him. But when he goes undercover in a strip club for a case, he finds himself in the path -- and in the lap -- of the woman he can't stop thinking about. And when someone knocks out the maid of honor, Cole is forced to ask Angie for help with his case. He needs to get close to the bridal party and she's his only hope of doing so.

Though Angie doesn't want to get her heart broken again, she can't say no to Cole. But the longer they're around one another, the less either is able to deny the sizzling chemistry between them...

It may take a strip club, an insane bridal party, and some smoking-hot sex, but true love gets a second chance in The Bridesmaid's Best Man. Angie and Cole's story is fast-paced and fun, thanks to Susanna Carr's superb storytelling.

Angie is an outstanding heroine. She's more comfortable in track pants and playing basketball than she is wearing stilettos and hitting the spa. It broke my heart that people constantly wear down her self-esteem by suggesting that she's unfeminine. Her breakup with Cole is the last straw in this area (she mistakenly believes her dominant attitude in the bedroom drove him away) and one of my favorite things about The Bridesmaid's Best Man was watching Angie find her confidence again. Cole, in turn, is a former cop with a scarred heart and a sexy swagger. What's most appealing about him is that he finds Angie hot-as-hell just as she is and he doesn't try to change her. Though the two of them fit great together, it's not an easy road to happily ever after. Cole's childhood has left him feeling unlovable and because of this, he pushes Angie away, even though he cares for her. I do wish Ms. Carr had shown some parts of their first romance in flashbacks, but even with just staying in the present, I really enjoyed watching Angie and Cole find their way back to one another.

Wedding drama and a bit of mystery involving someone trying to bump off bridesmaids adds further spark to The Bridesmaid's Best Man. Even though I cringed along with Angie in some parts, I liked this plotline just as much as I did the romance. I wouldn't wish that wedding on anyone, but it sure made for one heck of a story.

The Bridesmaid's Best Man is a sensual, engaging story with a heroine and hero who are sure to capture your heart. If you like second chance romances, Angie and Cole's book is for you.

Hot, Steamy, and Sweet

Hot, steamy, and adorably sweet. The Bridesmaid's Best Man was a fantastic romance. I absolutely loved it!

I loved the two main characters in this book. They were great and tons of fun to read about.

Angie is a tom-boy to the core and, as a result of all the people who tried to change her into a girly-girl, is rather insecure. So, she takes Cole breaking up with her on a deeper level because it hit all her insecurities. Despite her self-consciousness, I thought she was a strong heroine. One that wasn't about the change to please anyone. She knew when to stand up for herself and when to forgive. I thought she was a great heroine.

Cole was just as wonderful. Because of his past with his parents, he has deep a deep seated belief that he is unlovable. And, when he breaks up with Angie, it's because of the fear he has that, if she continues to know him better, she will come to hate him. His past is one hell of a story, and I won't give it away. But, I will say that it was a surprise. Though he finds himself lacking, I thought he was perfect. He was incredibly sweet, dedicated to helping others, and basically completely adorable. Loved him!

The romance was a perfect mix of sweet and spicy. Angie and Cole may have broken up, but their feelings never faded and that was obvious from the minute they reunited. They are what you call true love. And, damn, were there sparks flying between them! The heat between them was on fire. They were a perfect couple.

The plot was fast paced and I was hooked the entire way through. The mystery of who was targeting the bridesmaids had me on the edge of my seat. And, though I had suspicious about who was responsible, the reveal took me by surprise. And the ending was lovely.

The Bridesmaid's Best Man was a wonderful romance about a second chance. It was hot, sweet, and thrilling. I loved every bit of it! Lovers of romance, you definitely need to read this book.

In Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created one of the world's best known and (arguably) most fully realized literary characters. Since Doyle's death, there have been plenty of people writing knockoffs of his stories. But with rare exceptions (Nicholas Meyer comes to mind), most have not lived up to the high standards Doyle set in at least the best of his Holmes tales.

This volume includes the complete canon of Doyle's original stories -- four novels and fifty-six short stories, from "A Study in Scarlet" to "His Last Bow." While there are a handful of cases that bore significantly on international affairs (e.g. "The Bruce-Partington Plans"), most of them are of interest simply because of that touch of the _outre_ that Holmes loved so much and that provided such stimulating material to the ideal reasoner.

There are some clunkers in the canon, of course, but the vast majority of these stories -- especially the earliest ones -- are just brilliant. If you are reading them for the first time, I envy you; the sturdy Dr. John Watson is about to introduce you to a new world, a world of Victorian gaslight and Stradivarius violins, of hansom cabs and cries of "The game's afoot!"

For in reading this volume you will find such classic tales as "The Red-Headed League" and "The Man With The Twisted Lip"; you will encounter the famous dog that did nothing in the night-time ("Silver Blaze") and several versions of Holmes's favorite maxim ("When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth"); and you will meet one of the most fascinating and memorable characters ever to spring from the printed page: Holmes himself.

Perhaps most importantly, you will catch a glimpse of the world as an ideal reasoner might see it -- not as a grab-bag of random atomic facts in which our own role is negligible, but as a vast interconnected whole in which each part bears some necessary relation to the rest, and in which the reasoned pursuit of justice in all matters great and small is the business of each and every one of us.

Incidentally, the twentieth-century philosopher who presented that vision most consistently and cogently is, to my own mind, Brand Blanshard, and any Holmes readers who are interested in philosophy may enjoy investigating Blanshard's works as well.

The ultimate omnibus edition

Every Holmes fan has more than one version of the Canon, and this should be among the collection as your standard 'reading copy.' Until I discovered this edition, my favorite reading version was the 1970s Ballantine editions (with great introductions ranging from Joe Gores to Ellery Queen to P.G. Wodehouse)--but sadly, that edition is out of print, and never contained the final two Conan Doyle books anyway. This oversized paperback aptly fills the modern role of a definitive edition.
As for the stories themselves, you simply can't go wrong in rediscovering or reading Holmes for the first time. Sure, Conan Doyle's stories sometimes lacked an internal logic (my favorite tale, 'The Adventure of the Red-Headed League," is riddled with plot holes). But there's a reason these have remained as classics that have never gone out of popular fashion, over a hundred years since publication: they're entertaining, cleverly written, wonderfully detailed, and often edge-of-your-seat thrilling. Included are all 57 short stories (ideal for a quite hour in your armchair, or for a commute during which you can escape to Victorian London) and the four longer novels (the most popular of which is "The Hound of the Baskervilles," but don't pass up the sublime and underrated "The Valley of Fear"). This is the ideal book for a long vacation (especially to London!), and, if I were stranded on a desert island, this is the book I'd want most with me (well, after that 'How to Build an Island-Escaping Raft from Coconuts' book).
If you haven't discovered Sherlock Holmes, this is the edition of his adventures to buy. If you read Conan Doyle long ago but haven't picked him up since, this is the edition to buy. If you've got several other Sherlock Holmes books on your shelf but want a single-volume complete edition, this is the edition to buy. As it's been said, 'There's no police like Holmes.'

Wonderful Stories!!!

Back in the 1990s, I discovered the excellent Jeremy Brett filmed episodes of Sherlock Holmes...and that experience led me to the stories themselves. I then ended up reading all 56 short stories and 4 novels in short order.

There's a reason the character of Sherlock Holmes is remembered, some 125 years after his debut!!!

As one preface mentioned, Conan Doyle did not know how to write a dull sentence. Which is a very true statement. Virtually all of these stories are gripping ones, but even the lesser ones -- mainly the ones Conan Doyle wrote toward the end -- are so atmospheric, that your enjoyment is scarcely lessened.

Read these tales!! You won't be disappointed!!!

About the Author
Born and brought up in Wales, Jennie Jones loved anything with a romantic element from an early age. At eighteen, she went to drama school in London then spent a number of years performing in British theatres, becoming someone else two hours, eight performances a week. Jennie wrote her first romance story at the age of twenty five whilst 'resting' (a theatrical term for 'out of work'). She wrote a western! But nobody wanted it. Before she got discouraged a musical theatre job came up and Jennie put writing to one side. She now lives in Western Australia, a five minute walk to the beach that she loves to look at but hardly ever goes to - too much sand. Jennie returned to writing four years ago. She says writing keeps her artistic nature dancing and her imagination bubbling. Like acting, she can't envisage a day when it will ever get boring.

Lovely country, lovely characters

I've been waiting for this author's debut novel for a long time - not very patiently I might add. I love the cover. I think the cover perfectly sums up the lead character, Sammy. A lady ready with a laugh, and a warm and generous soul. Burra Burra Lane was worth the wait. I particularly liked the opening scenes and chapters. I love how Sammy gets introduced to Ethan (local hunky vet and carpenter) in the small town of Swallow's Fall. (I love how Swallow's Fall gets its name too).
There is lots of detail in this book, which appeals to me. I like detail in characters, in scenes and in emotions - I like to be drawn into the books I read - and so for me, The House on Burra Burra Lane was spot on.

I had the opportunity of reading The House on Burra Burra Lane by Jennie Jones and I loved every word. This books has it all, a sexy vet, beautiful scenery, cute children, and a three hundred pound pig. Let me tell you a little about this wonderful story.

Samantha Walker (Sammy to her friends) is a artist with a mother who has minuplated and belitted her all of her life. Never showing her love and forcing her to do her bidding until Sammy doesn't even know who she is any more. Running away from her controlling mother and an abusive ex-boyfriend she finds her self in Swallow's Fall (I died laughing when I found out how the town got its name) population 86. When she takes her beloved cat Duke to see the town vet, she never anticipated tripping over a three hundred pound pig name Ruby and falling into the arms of the sexy town vet Ethan Granger.

Ethan has lived in Swallow's Fall for all of his life. Raised in a home with an abusive father, and then losing his wife and brother to an accident that he blames himself for, he keeps his distance from everyone and will not risk getting to close to anyone for fear of turning into what his father was. But he just can't seem to fight the need to help and protect Sammy.

There is an instant attraction between these two, but they insist on just being friends. They think that things will be better that way, until they can't fight it any longer. They both have secrets that neither is willing to share with the other. But in a town like Swallow's Fall nothing can be hidden forever.

I loved Sammy's character. She marches to the beat of her own drum, not willing to allow anyone or anything control her. She has had enough of that in her life. She is strong, and intellegent, caring and helpful. I loved Ethan. He has a quiet strenght that just puts everyone at ease. The secret that is reveiled twords the end of the book threw me for a loop in a good way.

I would recommend this book to all my friends and I will look for more stories by this author.

I love Swallow's Fall!

Sammy needs a fresh start and therefore she moves to Swallow's Fall. She's purchased a house there that needs a lot of work, but she's determined to love and cherish it and to make it a wonderful place to live. While she's only been there shortly she meets vet and carpenter Ethan. He's the one she needs for help with her home. They come to an agreement, something that will suit them both, but isn't as easy for Ethan as it may seem. Of course this means spending more time together. They instantly have a connection, but both Sammy and Ethan also have a past...

The House on Burra Burra Lane is such a wonderful romantic story. The whole town wonders if Sammy is going to stay or if she will leave. Sammy doesn't want to go back to the city, not at all. She has a creative profession and she can work from home. I loved that about her character and enjoyed reading about her designs. She's cheerful and determined, but she's also been through a lot and that makes her uncertain of what the future will bring. Her past might eventually catch up with her, so Sammy is never completely at ease. Ethan is a great guy, but he has so many insecurities because of childhood memories and because of a certain family history. Both of them deserve some happiness, but it isn't easy for them to open up to someone.

I loved the unusual chemistry between the main characters. Jennie Jones has written a great romantic story, one that has a nice twist. It's different in a good way. I liked the way Ethan and Sammy communicate and I kept being curious to see how things would develop. I also loved the setting. I'm a big fan of small town romance and I instantly fell in love with Swallow's Fall. The gossip and bets are fabulous and I immediately liked the inhabitants. I'm planning to read another Swallow's Fall book very soon. I'm intrigued and can't wait to learn more about this amazing town.

I thought it was really good that's why I gave it a five star
Stacy learns to surf, Claudia meets a boy Dawn learns that she likes Carol.
I think that it was good that Mary Anne Meets this little girl.
I think that anyone can read this book up to 8-16.
Ann did really good.
What is good is that all of the babysitters club members learned a lesson even jeff Dawn's brother.
