Denise and Michelle Brauer were born and raised in the Mojave Desert of California. Denise is a writer and editor who has published in regional newspapers and magazines, academic journals, and has written for a variety of corporations and research centers. Denise lives with her family and two cats in northern California. Michelle owns a consulting business that serves small businesses throughout North America. She settled in the rainforest of the Pacific Northwest, where she lives with her husband and two children.

Young daughters become "parents" for their mentally ill mom

Beautifully and powerfully written, "When the Bough Breaks" by sisters Denise Bauer and Michelle Bauer is a must-read. Presented in chronological order, alternating points of view from sister-to-sister in succeeding chapters, as the tension mounts, this true story paints a vivid picture of teenagers whose mother's worsening and untreated mental illness consumes their otherwise normal family in a small California town. With day-to-day, sometimes hour-by-hour progression of a once-normal family as it is pulled into the depths of fear, uncertainty, dashed hopes and finally the suicide of the mother, the book has lessons for us all, not only those with mentally ill family members. Denise and Michelle, already under the expected stress of teenage life have the added burden of switching roles with their mother, becoming her protector, her guardian as her mental illness takes over the household, its finances, its future plans. Rarely, if ever, does a memoir completely capture the reader and become a page-turner. As an author and college writing professor, I marveled at how the co-authors' perspectives were transmitted directly to the reader. I wrote the authors a letter stating that my real sorrow after reading the book was that their actual experiences caused them to write it. Having one's childhood remain intact would have been everyone's, even the reader's, wish for them. Their motivation is that their painfully honest story will help to warn others in like circumstances.

A compelling story, beautifully told

When the Bough Breaks by Michelle and Denise Brauer is an enlightening, eloquent book. The fact that two sisters told the story of their mother's illness--from its onset to her demise--by seamlessly switching back and forth between their points of view as teens speaks to their skill, because it takes intelligence and heart to do that without making the narrative choppy. As for the experience of losing their mom, who declines rapidly from basically normal to suicidal, get out your tissues. Your heart will likely be wrenched during what is a wild, confusing, tragic ride. I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy memoirs, for those seeking to be informed about mental illness, and for those of us who are on the journey of accepting and learning to live fully after a loved one's suicide.

An honest recollection of the daughters' pain

The sisters, Michelle and Denise, tell their stories individually, yet they are congruous in describing how the bottom fell out of their lives during those dismaying and confusing months as their mother's illness progressed. Both sisters write candidly of their fears and their struggles of trying to cope with their teenage lives while helplessly witnessing the deterioration of their mother's mental health. This book is excellently written.
