We'd be surrounded constantly by the computer code of life, and never realize the true significance of leaves rustling down a forest trail, lightning cracking overhead, ocean waves roaring onto a beach, or breezes whispering among themselves. We'd be oblivious to what makes the world really tick.
And what if a species very similar to ours lived among us, and its members were able to hear the sounds of the world for what they were? What if they could control the elements themselves using only their words? These near-humans would be extremely powerful, but they'd also have to be careful. Why? Because as with anything, for every action there's an opposite and equal reaction--and magic is no exception.
These were the thoughts running through my head as I created the world of The Conservation of Magic, a place where characters command the forces of nature, and where their acts have very real consequences for those around them.
The Conservation of Magic is a story about living stone, cutting-edge technology, ethereal dragons, and a persevering hero. I tried to make it the kind of fast-paced fantasy adventure I like to lose myself in when I want to escape the realities of everyday life. Revision bc author corrected mistakes. (Original title:Would have been 5 stars if proof read instead of misusing spell check)

The author of the book, Michael Layne, went to the trouble and expense of re-editing this book to find the errors I mentioned. I was delighted and impressed that he did so. There is no longer any reason to give only three stars out of five since the author himself took the initiative and corrected the problem. I am changing my review to the five stars it now deserves, but am leaving the original post for others to read.
Here's my ORIGINAL post on this book------
Oh, lots of potential here. Should have been five stars and I really, really wish I could give the review more stars. However, there's a big issue with spell check changing the intent of the author. A lot of people would think I am nitpicking, but honestly, using spell check is just NOT sufficient as a proof reading process. I lost count of the times an incorrectly replaced word shattered the narrative. Spell check changed the author's choice of wording numerous times using homonyms (words that sound the same but have a different meaning).
Michael-- you have true talent and I look forward to future books, but please have a human do real proof reading. Spelling words correctly is important, but when your words are changed to ones with different meanings, your stories suffer. On the up side, you are a creative and unconventional story teller and I wish you good fortune in your career.

A Must Read for All Fantasy Fans!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book - well written and intriguing plot. If you enjoy fantasy books as much as I do, this needs to be downloaded immediately to your ereader. Don't wait - a world of magic and dragons eagerly awaits you!!!
This is now added to my list of favorite fantasy reads which also include the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series.
Eagerly awaiting the next in this series.
