I am thrilled with Laurie Eakes' works! I simply cannot put them down when I get them. It's so nice to be able to finish a book with a satisfied sigh, and a light heart. I definitly recommend this book!

Interesting story

Another of the books I bought from Koorong last year. I enjoyed this story. I felt for Susan who has 3 older sisters and 3 younger brothers. She is left to maintain the house because the older sisters and her mother think she is unable to help sew for missions or do other work to help. Susan feels she has no skills which isn't helped by her family who tend to put her down and expect her to stay at home. Daire has is own issues due to not knowing what he wants in life and having wasted his money in the city. When he sells a hairloom he later finds out its importances and this is where Susan comes in. Together they work to find out what happened to it and try to recover the heirloom. The book deals with self worth, compassion, discovery. A good read.

Good story poor writing

The story is enjoyable with many twists but it is written with so many syrupy phrases I had to speed read through it and just follow the story ignoring descriptive phrases. One can read about maple syrup hair only so many times. The characters rely so heavily on their relationship to God that they become a bit boring and fake sounding to me.

interesting ranch romance

The Ledbetter patriarch, Jesse's grandfather brought in James, a former Texan rancher before he became a corporate power broker to save the spread. As he works hard to win over the stakeholders, he succeeds with the brothers, while also finding himself attracted to his most adversarial Ledbetter Jessica. She begins to thaw and soon they fall in love, but his sophisticated Big Apple former girlfriend has arrived to reclaim James as hers.

RUNAWAY COWBOY is an interesting ranch romance starring two adversaries who are attracted to one another, but distrust each other and consequently their respective heart). Although her grandfather selected James and he wins over her brothers, Jessie goes overboard with her deep rooted cynicism about the Texas transplant; thus her negativity makes their forging a loving relationship seem off kilter even as he tries to persuade her otherwise.

FUN & MORE FUN

BOOBY TRAP

Having read the other three books in this series, I was happy when BOOBY TRAP was released. It does not disappoint!

Odelia Grey tries to have a normal life as a happy newly wed, living the good life with her hubby, cat and dog, working at a job she loves, having friends; more or less having it all.

What she can't do is stay out of is trouble. A new friend of hers, Lil, who she met on-line, has confessed to Odelia that she thinks her doctor son is none other than the dreaded serial killer, known as the Blond Bomber. Lil asks Odelia to start an investigation to find out if her son is the killer.

Odelia is off and running, working hard to find out the truth behind the murders of young women. She mets all sorts of characters, good and bad, and many from previous books. Under Ms. Jaffarian's wonderful writing skills, the book is one that you can't put down.

Odelia and her husband Greg are people you would want to meet and know. The writing is fun and fast paced and while you think you have figured out who the killer is, Ms. Jaffarian writes with such skill that this reader was left guessing and then finally surprised.

Read the series and have some fun. They should be read in this order --

Ms. Jaffarian has me trapped

Just when things seem to be going heroine Odelia Grey's way -- her home life is settled, her boss's arrogance is down to a low roar, even the dog and cat are getting along -- an elderly friend drops a bomb. Her son, a prominent plastic surgeon, has unexplained connections to a string of women who've turned up dead, all murders attributed to an unknown serial killer dubbed the Blond Bomber. Odelia, as usual, is in the thick of it, but this time her wheelchair-bound hubby is her partner in crime. Their relationship continues to evolve, which keeps this laugh-out-loud series fresh. Odelia is a woman you want to spend time with. Wherever she's headed, I'm along for the ride.

A Feisty Heroine and a Fun Mystery That Kept Me Guessing Til The End

(Note: There are some plot details here.) I used to read a lot of mysteries, but hadn't in a while, and was missing them. I saw a post on Twitter by Mystery Books about Booby Trap and immediately snapped up a copy of it, then spent the next few days with my head buried in the book. I love plus-size narrator/sleuth Odelia Gray - she's feisty, funny, bold, brave and caring. Sue Ann Jaffarian has created a memorable heroine and a fast-paced mystery.

This book centers around the Blond Bomber, a serial killer targeting hot blonde babes. She starts out with a shocker; her friend Lil asks her to investigate her own son, who she suspects of being the killer. Odelia agrees, even though her husband and friends are wary of her getting involved in another murder investigation. The more she finds out, the wilder the twists and turns of the case take, from Internet chat rooms to smuggling. Odelia doesn't so much go undercover as volunteers herself for everything from getting outfitted in a boudoir-worthy costume to making phone calls and meeting the people in the case.

This was my first book by Sue Ann Jaffarian, but definitely not my last. I look forward to reading the rest of Odelia's adventures. What I especially liked was that even though Odelia is the primary sleuth, the supporting characters are unique and fascinating in their own right, from her husband Greg (who's in a wheelchair) to the homeless neighbor who helps solve the case. Bravo to Jaffarian for making Odelia such a gutsy heroine and for creating a mystery that kept me highly entertained.

No cliff hanger ending

The story starts off with a young, innocent girl just falling for a guy that was who everyone thought was the best. Then her life turns into a nightmare for the next year.

Kari is a budding tattoo artist who is terrified of being inked herself. I found that amusing. She is also a 17 year old college student that lives at home with her mother. Plus she is incredibly awkward around son of the owner of the tattoo parlor. He is way too hot for her to be relaxed around. She has been burned before and she isn't ready to commit to any member of the opposite sex.

Neil Mars is an enigma at first. Alpha male, wannabe dance studio owner, and has fallen in love with his Angel after coming home to help his mother with the tattoo parlor. He is funny too though as well as being extremely protective.

I loved the interactions between Kari and Neil. I could so relate to some of the dumb things she did around him. If I had a panty-melter like Neil paying attention to me, I would probably lose some brain cells as well.

No cliff-hanger ending either so that was great.

Great book, quick read!

I was sent a copy from the author for an honest review. I have to say that I was really surprised by this book. I have read a few books where a girl was scorned by a guy. This one however got my attention with the prologue. It is quite different from all of them that I have read! I liked Kari's character. She is a snarky girl who works in a tattoo parlor. Even though her Mother does not approve. But, she loves it. If I have learned anything in this world its that if you find a job you love then by God keep doing it! Anyway, it is because of this job that she has some extra cash considering some of it is going to the A-hole Eddie. She also meets Neil here. I really like Neil. He is super yummy! He always is telling Kari that she saved him but, I think he is the one who did the saving. I liked how the story progressed, I had a hard time putting it down. When Kari's secret comes out will it ruin things with Neil? Will she ever be able to have a healthy sexual relationship after her past? Is her life on the road to being destroyed?

I would have to say that Agnas and Nalini are amazing. Agnas would be awesome to have as a mother. She is such a caring person. Nalini is a great friend. Blunt but, we all need that every once and a while. I found her extremely funny and I loved her relationship with her boyfriend. He was also great.

I really enjoyed Neil. The amazing man that rescues Kari on a white horse. He has a few secrets of his own that come out with time. I love that he lets Kari give him a tattoo. It's a very intimate thing. At least it felt like that to me. He also rides a motorcycle which is super sexy. Their romantic scenes are very hot. Like super spicy and I loved them. I didn't really know what to expect given the cover of the book. But, I loved it!

I really enjoyed this book and am glad I go the chance to review it. I would recommend it!! I have no idea if there will be another book in the series but, I was happy with the ending!

Shallow Fairy tale for teens

Where to start. This author deals with several important issues. The problem is that she deals with them very superficially and without sufficient real world knowledge. As a result, the shop owner's issue is handled incredibly unrealistically for the maximum amount of angst, but not any modern, practical considerations. Even the h's primary problem only pops up when necessary to cause the h to retreat, or be upset, but otherwise fades. And the resolution is dismayingly deus ex machina - not a deep or serious solution, but rather through a cheap and facile soap opera moment.

The story is told entirely through the narrow lens of the self-absorbed heroine. Yes, she has some major issues to handle, but she acts as if no one in the world has as horrible a situation as she does. She is incredibly unaware of anyone else until it is thrust in her face. Maybe this would work if the author were portraying her as a typical, self-involved teenager. The problem is that the author herself doesn't seem to realize how shallow her character is. So there is no basis for why everyone loves her, why she is so wonderful, or why the H falls head over heels for her. The H who is too wonderful for words. He is sweet, sensitive, hot, can cook, polite, protective, and, of course,

Can we say, trite?! This book is just full of cliches. You'd think the h really was an angel and the heavens were arranging everything for her. The boyfriend (/see above). And the friend's father of course happens to fit perfectly I'm with the plot too. And the police officer who does something NO POLICE OFFICER WOULD EVER DO!

Also, because the story is entirely from the h's POV, and she's a spoiled teenager, you don't get the full picture. You don't really understand the H's motivations or feelings. It feels like a set up for a book 2 from the H's POV. Except it wouldn't be worth reading. (And don't forget the creepiness of the 23 year old H and the NOT-mature 17 year old h.)

If I hadn't noticed that the author is in her 30's, I would have assumed she's a teenager too. This is a fairy tale for girls with a dash of modern reality - but just a dash, not enough to make any profound impact. Thank goodness it was free, but it wasn't worth my time.

El Perfume los va a llevar en el tiempo y facilmente los va a sumergir en el siglo 18. Van a poder oler y sentir como era el mundo y como vivia la gente en esos entonces. Al mismo tiempo es la fascinante y conmovedora historia de un niño solo, que ha sido siempre rechazado desde su nacimiento y que ha sobrevivido muchos obstaculos; sin embargo posee un gran talento. Este talento es por lo que el vive, lo que lo empuja a seguir adelante, lo que llega a ser su obscura obsession y finalmente su destruccion. Leanlo!

When you are more concerned about the next meal, and right after finishing the previous minutes ago there is a sign of addiction. Here are other indications the author gives of food addiction.

Excellent yarn, excellent value

I was a bit skeptical, given that low-priced first books are ubiquitous on Kindle and often worth, well, what you pay for them. This is a different breed entirely. While Crawshaw won't be mistaken for Faulkner, his prose is concise, direct, reasonably well-edited, and engrossing. He has a knack for detail without overwhelming the reader with minutia, and he speaks with authority when discussing the daily lives of soldiers. The Thirty Years War setting is a great one, and Crawshaw is at home there. Yes, the language is rather contemporary, but it's contemporary soldiers' cant, richly evocative of the broader impact if not the exact dialect of the seventeenth century mercenary world. There's enough personal and political plot elements to make the book much more than a litany of battle scenes (this gets more and more true in the subsequent books of the series), and everything mostly hangs together. I could wish for a bit more geo-political context, but there's enough to get by on if you're not a historian. Overall, well done and well worth many times the asking price.

Realism At Last. Thank you, Mike.

Finally, an author who treats historical fiction story lines and characters realistically. The people in this book are intelligent people. They aren't dumb to advance the plot, nor lucky to advance the plot, nor brilliant---to advance the plot. They are normal people reacting intelligently to their surroundings. Reading this novel, I feel like these characters could have been with me in the Army. And the situations are handled like we would handle them in today's Army. Crawshaw also brings to life the mundane but critically important aspects of logistics, time, distance, effort, etc., that real people of any era have to deal with. At last, I sense that I am experiencing the Seventeenth Century as it actually was. Thank you, Mike.

A stunning first book that is full of promise

Mike Crawshaw is a new author on the scene. If his first historical novel is anything to go by he will be here for a long time. 'Weaponsmith' is a historical saga that ranks with the best for descriptive narrative and strong characters. The promise is for two further books to follow on from the first giving a trilogy that could be worthy of expansion into other media. Strongly recommended.
