Fun Read

Usually when I read anthologies the theme tying them together is very loose. Not true in this book. Five wonderfully different characters with five very different prophesies make this an interesting read. A romance queen without a romance, a struggling doctor in a small town with one too many doctors, a war widow with a sick child, a daughter who wants a ring and a dog more than a husband and an Irish girl trapped at the edge of the earth. It is a perfect summer read. I enjoyed it very much.

An enjoyable and satisfying mixed bag of gems--some rough, but all sparkly!

The stories in this collection center around a group of young women, high school buddies who are about to reunite. Before they graduated, they voted each other "the girls most likely to" accomplish various things: the girl most likely to become the CEO, for instance, or the girl most likely to marry the prince. This proved to be a very clever and fun framework upon which to hang these five interesting stories.
I loved, loved, loved "The Girl Most Likely to Nail Charley Vargus," and it's the main reason I'm giving this book five stars. The title made me smile, first of all. But, wow, it was beautifully written! It was set in a small, mountain town, and I loved the sense of atmosphere. The characters were round and very likeable, and the author packed in so much plot that I felt as though I'd read a full-length novel by the time I finished this one story. It alone was worth the price of the book, and I hope the author--Linda Kaye, and you should remember that name, because with writing like this, I'll wager she's going places!--publishes more books soon. I'm seriously an eager fan.
The other stories were rather a mixed bag.
In "The Girl Most Likely to Conquer New York City," the heroine was a sort of quirky cartoonist, and the author used the comic strip in a most unusual and interesting way, which made the story memorable. The ending of "The Girl Most Likely to Marry the Prince" was fun. And the main characters in "The Girl Most Likely to Be Married with a Bucket Load of Kids" really tugged at my heartstrings. All of the stories' settings were distinct and interesting, and most of the characters were, too--particularly each unique heroine.
I do have one or two small criticisms: a couple of the stories contained typos, and one of them was so loaded down with them that it was distracting--which was a shame, because the story was quite nice otherwise. A couple of the stories seemed to have rather rushed endings with abrupt changes of heart--though I enjoyed reading the stories anyway. And one of the stories' main characters were actually quite unlikable to me (though other readers will no-doubt find them loveable. :-) ).
All in all, I'd love to see these authors do another anthology. I'd buy it without hesitation.

A Fun and Lighthearted Read.

The premise is that 5 women are having a mini High School Reunion when they hit 30 - and to see if the predictions they made about each other when the graduated High School were on target or just off base.
It is a format that the authors did well with - 5 very different stories about quite different women, but with a thread that connected the stories in a comfortable way. The stories are a little predictable - spoiler alert: Look for a Happy Ending all around! - but the predictability didn't in any way detract from my enjoyment of the stories. Each character was uniquely portrayed and I got a sense of the life she had led in the 12 years since High School. Sometimes I didn't find the characters particularly likeable, but the story was always engaging and thoroughly readable.
This was a great companion for me on a recent camping trip. Light hearted, easy to read, and fun. A perfect read with coffee on a cool morning in front of the tent.
My only criticism was the typos and grammatical errors in a couple of the stories. I hope in future collaborations (and I hope there will be future collaborations) they will edit each others' work a little more closely.
All in all a fun and enjoyable read.
