On March 26, 1997 Rancho Santa Fe, California, thirty-nine men and women were found dead in a large rented mansion, the apparent victims of self-induced drugs and alcohol. The twenty-one women and eighteen men, ranging in age from twenty-six to seventy-two years were members of the Heaven’s Gate cult. This is believed to be the largest mass suicide ever to take place on US soil._____________________________________________
The first question most ask is ‘Why did they do this?’ But the answer is as difficult to understand as the act itself. From their own accounts, they believed that ‘killing their bodies would free their souls, and allow them to reach the Next Level of Human Consciousness. The members believed that a UFO was following the Haley-Bopp Comet and would be their guide. As the comet neared the Earth, the members carried out their deaths, as agreed and planned. They cut their hair in similar short styles, dressed in matching new purple garments and Nike ™ athletic shoes, ate identical last meals, and methodically ended their lives.
Each had written or video-taped messages for the families and world they left behind, explaining that this departure was their choice, and was to be celebrated, not mourned. The group, now known as Heavens Gate, had been in existence for more than 20 years, under various names, including: The Two, Human Individual Metamorphosis (HIM), Total Overcomers Anonymous, Total Renunciants in Readiness for the Kingdom of Heaven, and The UFO Cult. To most of us, the group was completely unknown, by any name, until their death.
In the months that followed the mass suicide, many articles were written about the thirty-nine individuals, their common beliefs and practices, their families, and their lives before joining the cult. However, there were other deaths related to this cult, others who believed as they had, and reached beyond life, toward the Next Level. Some were reported in the news media, some were not.
James Edward Pirkey Jr, called “Gabody” by his cult family, was one of the former members whose death trailed the mass suicide. He was thirty-six years old and living in a small apartment in Atlanta, Georgia, when he followed the “precious spirits” to the Next Level.
I am his sister, and this is his story-told from his letters and my memories.

From the Author
This was a difficult book to write as I lost my brother to suicide, through his involvement with the Heaven's Gate cult. However, it is a story that needed to be told--to emphasize the importance of the first five years of a child's life and how that shapes their future, even as adults.
I was blessed to spend the first five years with my grandmother on her farm in North Georgia-my story is told in my first book "One Moment, One Memory, One Motion" and readers will find it a good companion book to Closing The Gate. My children's book "Pink Place" was taken form a poem that describes my childhood safe place inside of me--a place where I remembered and revisited my grandmothers farm, during the later years when my brother and I endured constant chaos, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and parental mental illness. Today, my life is happy and filled with family of my own and a full and busy life -as a writer and a Quality Manager for a medical device company in middle Tennessee. Another great job by Deb Simpson

Deb Simpson has once more done a wonderful job. Closing the Gate examines through narrative the upbringing and household of herself and her brother Jimmy, a former Heaven's Gate member who kills himself in the aftermath of the cult's mass suicide. Both entertaining and insightful, this real-life tale illustrates the effects of early childhood on individuals and what may drive one sibling to the brink and the other to overcome.
The story was wonderfully executed, told through the eyes of Deb Simpson, her mother, stepfather, and her brother himself, Jimmy. Each personality has their own intricately nuanced voice, lending to a greater understanding of their personalities, obstacles, and experiences. Each section draws you in by getting you to invest in the character, as they tell you their stories, one on one.
Both tragic and inspiring, this book has given me new insight. To understand the almost incomprehensible insanity of mental illness, walking the same path again and again whilst hoping for change, was an abstract to me beforehand. Even more enlightening was Jimmy's description of Heaven's Gate. For the first time, I could grasp the appeal of a cult and the subtle vulnerabilities which can make a seemingly normal person at risk of falling prey to their promise of a better life. For me, this story has been enriching in ways I could never have expected, and I believe it can be a valuable tool to anyone who is struggling to understand a loved one's choices or the motivations of those reaching for a new family and "the Next Level."

A very personal testimony

This book is a compelling read. It tells the life story of Jimmy Simpson (aka GBBody), the author's brother, who joined the Heaven's Gate group, led by Marshall Herff Applewhite, whose 39 members committed mass suicide in 1997. Jimmy was not one of the 39: he had left the group, but tried unsuccessfully to re-find them, and later committed ritual suicide alone, nearly two months after the group's notorious demise. Simpson tells Jimmy's story from a variety of standpoints: her mother's, her father's, Jimmy's (all in their distinctive dialects), and her own. The book recounts Jimmy's life from birth to death, portraying a dysfunctional family with Jimmy as a loner, his father a child-abuser with an anti-social personality disorder, and his mother a schizophrenic. Simpson has included some invaluable primary source material consisting of old family photographs, Jimmy's autopsy report, various letters written Jimmy, and some of his drawings. There is also some basic information about the Heaven's Gate group and their strange worldview. The book offers important insights into the question that many of us ask: What on earth makes anyone join a group like Heaven's Gate?

Closing the Gate

Deb Simpson's familial voices ring with authenticity, call out to us, and pull the reader into the midst of a deeply troubled family where Simpson's conversational tone insists we pay attention. The wealth of photos and documentation add to the scope of this book that is at once heart-wrenching and inspiring. The reader comes away with a clearer understanding of mental illness, the lure of belonging to a cult, and an imperative to nurture, protect, and care for children, particularly in their formative years. Closing the Gate is an honest, courageous and moving book that will linger in one's mind long after closing the book. Kudos to author Deb Simpson!
