McKinley. His book Minus 148° has been a mountaineering classic since its first publication in 1969. He lives in
Anchorage, Alaska.

Adventure of a lifetime!

This is a fascinating book about a truly great adventure. Art Davidson was in the first winter ascent of Mt. McKinley. Of the eight who started, most did not make it to the top but even for those who didn’t, it was still the adventure of a lifetime. This is far better than an fictional thriller!
I love the details of how the camp is set up each night and what they ate and what they did in their down time. Details from diaries kept by the various climbers are included and that gives a great insight into how different people were seeing the climb.
I’m not going to try to describe the hardships and tragedies they faced. The book does a fantastic job of that and I won’t try to repeat it. It is truly a story of heartbreak and triumph. I think this is one of those books that I’m richer for having read and will probably return to in the future

A mountaineering book that goes beyond the genre

In 1967, Art Davidson and seven others decided to try the first winter ascent of Mount McKinley (Denali), North America’s highest peak. Because Denali lies so far north, its elevation of 20,322 feet (6194 meters) gives it nasty conditions comparable to higher Himalayan peaks. In addition, there is less air at higher altitudes because of the effects of the Earth’s rotation, making high-altitude mountaineering more challenging. The peak is also famous for its storms, especially its wind. Remember, they’re trying this in winter.
The team gets off to a bad start, in part because it’s not a team. Skill levels, fitness, acclimation to altitude, and climbing styles vary. Leadership is a problem. People, including the author, make some bad decisions. Then things get bad when three members of the team spend six days in a horrible storm, with temperatures below -40F/C, winds of 100-150 mph (150-200 kph). Did I mention that they have very little food? And no tent? And the storm blows some of their supplies off the mountain?
Mountaineering stories often emphasize the heroism of the protagonists. There’s a little of that here, but more of the story focuses on the psychology of the climbers. Davidson is honest about himself, and honest about others. He blames himself for some decisions. He usually doesn’t blame others for their decisions, but the facts often make you wonder.
The book is a compelling, fast read. If you like mountaineering or adventure stories, you should definitely read it - but it reaches beyond the genre and should be enjoyed by a wider audience.

A COURAGEOUS AND HISTORIC FIRST...

It is clear from the beginning of the book that trouble was looming on the horizon for these intrepid, but somewhat reckless climbers. The loss early on of one of their comrades to a fall into a crevasse was predictable. How they could think of walking unroped, on a glacier that they knew was ridden with crevasses, is almost unbelievable. This was due, no doubt, to youthful inexperience and the lack of leadership necessary to set the parameters of what would be acceptable in terms of safety. These factors combined were to cost them dearly. It was not til their forty-two day stay on the mountain that they were coalesced into a team.
Notwithstanding. Their sheer recklessness of their initial, bumbling efforts at a winter ascent of Mt. McKinley, the fact remains that they did achieve the first such summit, no mean feat any time of year, but almost inconceivable in the dead of winter. Coming off the summit, their thermometer recorded the temperature at a quite bone chilling minus fifty-eight degrees.
Caught in a whiteout on their descent, however, the three summiteers were forced to dig a snow cave. There they were to spend endless days in in weather that saw temperatures plummet to an almost mind boggling minus one hundred and forty-eight degrees with the windchill factor, hence the name of the book. That they could survive this is a testament to their fortitude.
This gripping chronicle of the forty-two days they spent on the highest and coldest mountain in North America is a classic in mountaineering literature and one of the best books on Mt. McKinley climbs. Those who love this genre will certainly enjoy this book. It is made all the more interesting by the author's new afterword, which gives a retrospective of what happened to all those who participated in the first winter ascent of Mt. McKinley.
