book gets better and better as you read.

I was interested in knowing more about African wildlife especially predators. Mr. Schaller starts his book with a narrative that describes his family settling into a life of studying wildlife in the Serengeti. As the book progresses he shares more information on lions and other predators based on his research and in collaboration with other scientists. His information is shared with a hope (I assume) that the reader is capable of digesting the material as it presented. I enjoyed this aspect of his book and it encouraged me to think as well as just read the information provided. I would recommend this book to people that want to learn more about African wildlife.

I received this book just before the lion Cecil was killed and the news was full of reports regarding the status of lions.
This made the book even more interesting and have enjoyed comparing the stats from 1973 to today's numbers. The information about how lions live and their habits gave me some added insight into the problems regarding Cecil. I wonder if much has changed except for the loss of lion surviving and the knowledge of the conservationist. A darn good read and lots of information. I have enjoyed reading other books by George
Schaller - his writing style makes the information interesting and clear. He and Alan Rabinowitz are favorites on my book shelf.

This book is well written and interesting. It kept my attention and I felt like I was right there with the author in some of the experiences he shared. Having grown up in a seedy area on the S. Side of Chicago, with real pimps and prostitutes as friends and neighbors, I can say this book does share a lot of the Truth. It does not express or teach the fantasy ideas that many are familiar with. Rather it points out and proves why those ideas are weak. If you are interested in the deeper aspects of "the game" you will find them here.

It is 20% cooler now...

This item is great and my 12 y/o daughter keeps telling me her iPhone is 20% cooler now - LoL
The only reason it got 4 stars is that the description says the 3D Sublimation Printing thing and that's kind of misleading.
I thought it meant the case was kind of textured or that it was one of those 3D holographic deals - nope it was neither.
She was kind of bummed, but it's Rainbow Dash so she got over it pretty quick.
Just don't tell your kid (or yourself) it's a 3D anything - it's just a flat case with no special effects.
Other than that ding it's perfect and she loves it so I'm a happy dad!

Are you looking for a badass protagonist, action packed story? Then YES you have come to the right place my friends. This book will guide you to the world of goddess war and it will have you sitting at the edge of your seat, trying to catch on breath >.< And I meant it, my eyes were glued to the page as battles raged, secret was revealed and those blood bath games took place. Some swoon moments in there too to fill your need for romance, Calen will melt your heart ---> a mighty prince and a lady killer ;) Also there is a lot of world building. You feel like you're there because of the so detail that kicked off all your five senses. The ending was a killer, I need the second book now to know what is going to happen next.

What I Liked:

I really liked this book! I expected it to be excellent, because it came highly anticipated and promoted by the book blogging community. This book is the first book written by Trisha Wolfe that I have read (shh, don't tell her!), even though I have been a huge fan of hers for quite some time. It is mostly because of her upcoming novel Fireblood. Oh my GOSH, how I want that book.

Anyway. This book was awesome! The world-building, the plot, the characters, the romance... wow! I was very surprised by how well this book was written. Not that I did not expect it to be well-written, but I was gob-smacked by the superb quality! (no offense, Ms.Wolfe!)

The world-building was so, SO good. This book is a fantasy novel, and therefore, readers must get a feel for the world and the setting and the customs from the beginning. It is not always easy for the author to do this, with dumping a ton of information on the reader all at once. Ms. Wolfe did not have this problem. I got a fantastic understanding of the world of Cavan in the beginning and throughout the novel. This is an amazing fantasy world that Ms. Wolfe has created!

The mythology in this book is also excellent. I was never really confused about the goddesses and rituals and powers and whatnot. It was very obvious that Ms. Wolfe put a great deal of thought into the mythology of this book (not that she wouldn't put a great deal of thought into ANY part of the book).

The plot was all-around pretty good. Once we get to the cage fighting, not much happens, until the next big scenery jump. I liked the progression of Caben and Kaliope's relationship. That seemed to take over as the primary plot, when we as readers got to the cage fighting.

The romance was by no means overwhelming. This book was fantasy, and mythology, and then romance. I loved the romance in this book. I previously mentioned how the cage fighting part of the book is eclipsed by the romance, but it's more like they are dual plot-lines, but the romance is more prominent. I focused more on the romance than the cage fighting, because the romance was so sweet! No insta-love whatsoever. You can trust Ms. Wolfe to have her characters have a gradual progression of feelings! And yay for no love triangle! Always a plus with me.

Kaliope is an awesome protagonist. We know she will be tough and and kick-butt and loyal to the bone, but she is also sweet and caring and not always sure of herself. Her weaknesses make her strong, especially her mercury. I admire her, and I think that despite her tenacity, she is a lovely example of what I like see in Young Adult and/or New Adult fantasy books.

Caben is basically a perfect counterpart for Kaliope (if it's okay if I use the word "counterpart" without offending anyone). He is headstrong and courageous and slightly domineering but not in the overly alpha way where you just want to punch them in the face! Nah, he is great. I really, really like him. The scenes with him are my favorite - which is awesome, because he is in so many of them!

What I Did Not Like:

There was not too much that I did not like! A few minor things, really. I thought the pacing at the end was a bit rushed. Throughout the book, there was a slow pace, even with the action scenes. Not necessarily slow, but not quite fast either. But then the last 20% (ish) were really fast. But this was not too much of a hindrance! I just feel like while I savored the first 80%, I did not grasp the last 20% as well.

The plot is sort of slow, once we get to cage fighting. I expected this, because the majority of the book is at the cage fighting prison, but not much happens. Kaliope and Caben's relationship really develops, which is great! There are fights, some theories, but not too much. I don't know, maybe I just expected more.

The ending. Brace yourself. All does NOT end well. But there are more books in this series!

Would I Recommend It:

YES, totally! I absolutely LOVE fantasy (it's my favorite genre!), but I feel like I haven;t read a lot of good ones recently. This one is definitely an EXCELLENT fantasy novel. And it's a New Adult age level novel! So, you New Adult fans will love this book! It's also got a steampunk feel to it. Definitely heavy on mythology. This book is so diverse! Everyone could read it (and hopefully like it!).

A good read.

Did I enjoy this book: I did. I tore through it in two days.

I was instantly addicted to Kaliope - the steampunk version of Katniss Everdeen. She's tough. She's guarded. She's got a soft spot for the helpless. Like Katniss, she has her share of struggles: faith versus science, love versus duty, the good of one versus the good of many. Like Katniss, she's forced to fight her allies. Like Katniss, she lives in a world where things aren't always what they seem.

Kaliope's a more extreme version of Katniss, though: her innards contain a bit of clockwork and a lot of mercury - a most coveted resource in her world - giving Kal the upper hand in battle. Her softer side is a bit squishier, too; she has more faith in... FAITH... than her dystopian counterpart. It's naivete, perhaps, but it makes Kal just slightly more loveable - more addictive.

I did, of course, have a few issues with the book. Beyond the grammatical errors & typos that are sadly commonplace in e-books, I found it difficult to determine how Kal (and by Kal, perhaps I mean Wolfe, or perhaps I even mean myself) feels about the goddesses. It's possible I'm projecting my own ambivalence, but I think the storyline would be more successful if Kal had been cured by magic rather than a deity. It seems, especially in the world that Wolfe has created, that magical intervention makes more sense than divine intervention. Having said that, though, I'm already anxious for the next installment.

Would I recommend it: I already did! After about 100 pages I sent my sister a text saying she NEEEEEEEEDS to read it. =) If you like dark, dystopian fantasy you'll enjoy this book.

Will I read it again: I'm planning to read it again just before the second book comes out (to refresh my memory).

Good reading

This is a delightful book. Not that the writer's more well-known TOUCHING THE VOID is badly written; it isn't, and it remians on my short list of the best mountaineering/adventure books I've read. But in THIS GAME OF GHOSTS Simpson stretches out more fully, more autobiographically (is that a wrod?) in an attempt to explain (to himself, to the reader) what it is about climbing that is so attractive, so essential to his existence. While he is honest almost to a fault, Simpson is smart enough to not fall (no pun intended) into the cliches and pseudo-mystical parrot talk that waters down an awful lot of mountaineering lit. For Simpson, there is no short, definitive answer as to why he is drawn to steep, icy mountain walls. On the other hand, the whole book is an answer to this question, which he poses, dismisses, returns to, and obliquely answers over and over.
This is not just a good mountaineering book; it is a bood book, period. At first I thought Simpson was being a bit self-indulgent by detailing his early life. ("Who does this guy think he is?" I asked myself. "This isn't Winston Churchill or even Frank McCourt, but an unknown Brit who thinks we care about his schoolboy years.") But he won me over through his strong sense of humor and good storytelling. And the whole thing is full of good stories. Part of the book's appeal is in the stupidity of Simpson's climbing mistakes, many of which lead to life-threatening accidents. But through all his many incidents, Simpson proves to be as resilient as a rubber ball.

Fear is the Key

From Simpson's introduction to this book we realize that it is perhaps fear, and overcoming fear and the accompanying exhiliration that drives him. Or is it?
Touching the Void was a brilliant book, detailing a horrific climb and fall in the Peruvian Andes. But at the end, you do wish you could know more about this guy. This Game of Ghosts fills in the blanks. Beginning with his upbringing as the youngest of 5 children, we get to come along as he is introduced to climbing, and adopts it more as a lifestyle than a hobby. Simpson comes of age literally and figuratively in this book. His writing is more polished than in his first book, he is older and wiser, and has gone on to experience more peaks, more true friends, more loss. He explores these things in an effort to describe the allure climbing holds for him, while admonishing us not to assume all adrenaline junkies are the same.
Don't worry, this isn't a philosophy book. It's chock full of fantastic adventures and once again we get to accompany him to dangerous places where we feel the cold, the fear, and the companionship of like minds. This is a must read for anyone who liked Touching the Void. Highly recommended.

"This Game of Ghosts" is about 10 times better than "Touching the Void". The writing is so much better, it's hard to believe that it's the same author. Simpson touches on his childhood as well as his early climbing years. You really get to know the author thorough many events instead of just one covered in his first book. His narratives are extremely funny and entertaining. What an incredible cast of characters. Simpson talks about what climbing meant to him, and how in changed his life. Truly a fantastic read.
