Jack Shack History Comes Alive

The summer cottage the young protagonist mocked as inhabited by ghosts is in fact the setting of spirits with unfinished business. In this intriguing novel, the main character Ron, a college student home summers, learns the multifaceted history of this Clam River location, complete with shipping, bootlegging, and, most significantly, the Underground Railroad. The local history is meticulously woven into the plot of the developing friendship of Ron and elderly Jack, the mysterious cottage owner and a mentor of civility. Ron in turn respectfully develops a relationship with descendants of some who journeyed north on the Underground Railroad. The narrative, dialogue, and description create a detailed, personal picture of Clam River, Michigan, in the past.
The historical aspect of the novel creates a story within a story.This novel also seems to me to be a "coming of age" story, as the eye-opening historical events change Ron's impressionable, young view of the world. College is also working it's magic on him. The delightful sense of place described in Clam River charmed me. Being a Michigan native, I can picture and smell the clothes line of bathing suits hanging off the cottage porch.
This is the book for you if you are interested in the real story behind an idyllic setting.

Searching for Answers

I loved this book. The author shows the journey of a young man asking questions and searching for answers. The local mystery, set in a resort area of northern Michigan, keeps the reader moving ahead to find out what happens. As someone who is familiar with the area, it was a delightful glance back in time. My favorite part of the book was watching the relationship develop between the young man, at the beginning of his life, and the old man, near the end of his. Using poetry to connect the two was an inspiration. "I've learned from the sage a patience and view of life, time and love which I never knew." If all youth today had the curiosity, courage and sensitivity shown by the main characteer in this story, our world would be a better place.

One-Eyed Jack is not only a mystery, but a story filled with friendship, compassion, history, and is even peppered with a dash of humor. Throughout the book, I could sense the passion of the young man as he went on his journey of discovery. Page after page I could feel his friendship grow with his newly found friend. Together they not only bridged the generation gap, but successfully solved their quest, and formed an everlasting bond. Due to my southern roots, it was easy and interesting for me to follow some of the wretchedness of slavery as it evolved in the book and delighted in the trust and humility that resulted in another unexpected friendship.
