This is not a recipe book

This is an advertisement for a weight loss program that you have to spend extra for. The first part of the book is a link to this program. Then you get the recipes. They aren't recipes, they are ideas, you have to figure out how to actually make the item. Though, it does often tell you to tip things out of the pan.

Have you ever had a good idea gone oh so wrong? Eat quinoa, my nutritionist said my first day on a new diet. So, being gung-ho (for who isn't gung-ho their first week on a new diet?) I went right down to our natural food store. When they didn't have the quinoa listed on my magical little diet list in stock and was told they could special order it ... for a price ... I did what any other frugal American would do and bought bulk. Yessiree! I bought a great big ginormous 40-pound bag of red quinoa!

You ever see that movie Finding Nemo where the fish from the dentist's fish tank finally orchestrate their escape into the ocean and are floating in the plastic baggies? Yeah ... it was like that. Now what? The entire family quickly balked at a constant diet of steamed red quinoa seeds, so 38.5 of that 40 pound bag has been sitting in my pantry for the past year.

Enter '40 Top Quinoa Recipes For Weight Loss.' You mean quinoa has a bitter shell and you're supposed to RINSE it first? Why didn't the nutritionist tell me that? No wonder the kids were balking! Or you can use it to make a tabbouleh-salad type concoction with lots of veggies and it actually tastes good? Or risotto? Pumpkin risotto?

I've tried 3 recipes from this little cookbook so far and have several more circled as potential 'favorites.' I liked it enough to use Adobe Reader to print it out 2-per-page and staple it together into a little 4.25x5.5 cookbook to keep in my cookbook collection so I'll use it every day. One of my 5-pound storage tubs of quinoa has been used! Whoopee! Only 35 pounds of quinoa more to go...

[*As for last year's diet ... I lost 8 pounds WITHOUT eating the quinoa and then gained it right back again so hopefully this cookbook will help with THAT problem as well!*]

Surprized at the number of humorous stories.

Poe was an original. You have to read Poe if you are at all interested in the origins of detective fiction and speculative fiction (weird tales!)

I recommend the kindle edition because of the number of archaic words--the dictionary is there by simply highlighting a word. You may even know the word but you may not have the full sense of how it was used in the mid-1800's.

I wish it had a few footnotes when Poe launches into French or Latin. The phrases may have been well know in his day for people of his educational level but I usually don't get the reference. Fortunately there are only a couple times when it is a "plot point" or end of story zinger that I missed out on.

Many stories are humorous and snarky. He wields a wicked pen. I was also surprised--comparing my memory of the better known stories from my youth to a recent reading--that there are no supernatural elements other than a strong implication of fate or of cosmic justice.

You can see how death of his young wife influenced the stories. Reading them all in a collection like this, over a short time, I felt I got a real sense of the man. In that, the reading becomes increasingly more sad. Even the humorous stories reveal a frustrated genius. His worth to society (in monetary reward) undercut Poe's opinion (and the fact!) of his own superior intellect and you can see than anger in many of his stories.

With today's copy write laws his monetary worth really would have been commensurate to his self-opinion. (In the U.S. in his day, the author only had first-publication rights--in other words he got $6 for the initial publication of "The Raven" whereas any publishers in the mid 1800's sold magazines and collection that included Poe's works and Poe saw narry a dime. Today, an author such as $BILLIONAIRE$ JK Rowling--IF THEY RETAIN THE COPY RIGHT--make the main pile of cash, rather than the publishing companies (there is no media exec worth anywhere near what any popular writer or rock star is worth.) Yea, modern copyright laws!

Have fun with the reading. They are not all winners and early in his career he was not above self-plagiarizing but I enjoyed many of the stories very much.

Why Having complete Works of Poe at My Fingertips is Awesome

I have been a POE fan since jr high (I am 75) so it is just great to have it on my kindle and be able to read or re-read it at any time. I probably know all of the short stories by heart and can recite Annabelle Lee from memory.

if you like good literature this is one of the best books to read. You do not have to read it all at once you can pick it up and read a short story or a poem better yet curl up on the couch on a rainy night with this book and a glass wine and you good to go. Turn off the one-eyed monster and read

Life's a Beach Then You Die

Max Fried is a retired computer forensic examiner who devotes his time to swimming and drinking in the hot Florida sun. When a lawyer persuades Max to find a deceased client's estate assets, Max takes the job, thinking it will be easy money. As soon as Max gets the dead mans laptop home he thinks his job is soon finished. He finds little to be concerned about but he stores a copy of the information on his new iPod. Max doesn't know the computer contains clues to a 20 year-old murder and the thief doesn't know Max stored a copy of the stolen computer on his iPod. Max comes home to find his house trashed and both his computer and the laptop gone. He calls Ed to tell him this latest news and try to figure out what's going on. His wife is scared to stay, and goes away until the house is again safe. I really did enjoy this story, but I had more fun with the lack of editing. "Max lied on his bed." "Max turned up his color," and many more. It didn't really take away from the story but it was a distraction never the less. I would give it four stars without the distractions.

Life's a Beach Then You Die is a nice little read. You start out by meeting Max and Mariel, recent retirees to New Smyrna Beach, Florida. A nice couple who enjoys the weather in Florida, the beach near their house, the bars they frequent and not wearing any underwear. (You'll have to read the book to understand.)

When Jack, the bartender at Bobbi and Jack's Beachside Patio introduces Max to Ed, a lawyer whose client has just died, the fun begins. Ed wants Max to help find out financial information from a laptop. Being a retired computer forensics examiner, at first Max says no and then reconsiders.

The rest of the book centers on what is on the computer ... and who stole it from Max. People listed on the computer start dying and Max may be next.

The plot was good; it kept my interest from start to finish. I think it could have delved a little deeper, but this seems to be a humorous mystery, not a serious one.

I'd read this author again.

Falafel Jones is at it again! After I finished the Kewpie Killer, jonesing for another Jones' mystery, I found this one! New characters,a new intrigue all set on Florida's beautiful east coast. What more can a reader ask for? A real page turning stunner, I recommend this beauty of a book. Where has Falafel Jones been all my life??

Amazing game

Having an absolute blast with this game. 10/10, would highly recommend. Knowledge of Dresden universe is helpful but unnecessary, and I think it's a good Urban Fantasy RPG in general. The free download content from the makers at evil hat also makes the Kindle version just as useful as a hardback, although I may later buy the books in hardback, simply to get the extra visuals of the notes in the margins.

A very different but worthwhile game system

I've run the game a few times and now feel confident enough to write a review.

The first thing I want to note is that this system does a beautiful job of simulating the Dresden file books, which is a real tribute to the designers. I particularly like the remarkably different feel of the game for the different power levels. The game system feels completely different for a character who's just getting their feet wet compared with a Dresden-like power-level. It really is the same very simple system but it feels so completely different you have almost can't believe it.

The second thing to note is that this is first and foremost a system for story-tellers. The designers actually urge the GM to assign the duties in creating the city environment. This has two major impacts: it causes the players to become intimately acquainted with their role-playing environment and it reduces the load on the GM, which is a GOOD thing!

Th design decision to emphasize story has a very large impact on the system. Luck is removed from the game as much as possible to avoid having it mess up the story. It's also hard to kill characters in this system by design (unexpected deaths might mess up the story).

Third, while this game system is REALLY simple to play (it is more like cooperative story-telling than a traditional player group vs. the world game system) and it REALLY keeps the GM and the players on their toes. At any given moment the player may be asked to describe how they were wounded and to assign a penalty to themselves as a result of the injury. On the other hand, the game system encourages the players to go even further afield than they normally do. I would say that this system offers less support to the railroaded, single direction adventure than I've seen in my 30+ years of gaming.

Fourth, this is a skeletal system by design. There are great big sections of the system that are literally left up to the GM and players to handle. This leaves very little down-time for the GM and players. You don't have the usual predictable 2-hour long final battle where the players can start swinging their swords and don't have to consider the consequences. Combat in this system is short, nasty, and brutish. There's tons of room for tactical maneuvering (mental and social, the game doesn't stand much on setting up a scene and using lots of mini's, that would just slow things down) but the situation constantly changes and the GM and players have to adapt to the new circumstances very quickly.

The only bad experience we've had with the game system so far is when I (as the GM) didn't sleep well the previous night and just wasn't up to the subtleties of the player's requests. We're back on track now and heading for the epic conclusion but it was pretty rough session on everybody.

If your group is able to handle the challenges this system presents and are looking for some outstanding Urban Fantasy action, I'd suggest you dump whatever system you're running and jump on this ship. The system is very simple, very smooth, and rather elegant. Very well done!

Time and Again - A Nice Sunday Drive

Henry Wood, a strangely articulate and thoughtful post-bellum gumshoe, has lost his best friend and mentor. As if this isn't enough, an old love has surfaced, shadowy denizens of the fine art underworld are threatening his existence and his wardrobe keeps sending him stuff from the future.

One might think, from all this, that what we're in for here is a hectic, surrealist romp through the vintage noir world of early 20th Century America, but we're not. The atmosphere is relaxed, as is the pace, with plenty of time for a sip of vodka, a wise-cracking conversation and just general looking about.

The text is raw in places and feels unfinished in others, but the author frequently displays a surprising gift for original and evocative description. The characters are fresh and funny and the period, a familiar darling of film and literature, has been nicely realised. Also, you get to learn about Ancient artifacts and what-not.

Over and above any of this, however, is the fact that what Meeks has created is a nice place to be. There is something very comforting about a world connected by landlines and foot-messenger, where taxis are abundant and people, not so much. The atmosphere is soothing and quaint, like an oak-panelled room, and it makes the reader want to stick around for a bit longer.

All in all, Time and Again is just like a very pleasant Sunday drive.

Great mystery, kept me on my toes!!

Might I begin by saying I do like a good mystery. I enjoy watching shows like Matlock, NCIS, Perry Mason and more. Give me all day to watch Law and Order: SVU reruns and I'm happy. I love the mysteries which keep you guessing, those which don't give away who did it during the very first chapter. Those are never fun!

If you are like me, liking good mysteries, and want a great mystery to read, then I highly suggest Henry Wood: Time & Again by Brian D. Meeks. Mr. Meeks does a fantastic job of setting up everything, from who was murdered, the possible suspects, his friends and acquaintances and more without giving away who did it! I found the writing exciting, intense, some laughable moments, serious at times and couldn't put the book down!

This is a book I would highly recommend and you can bet I will be purchasing other mysteries written by Brian D. Meeks! This is one for the book shelf!

STILL HATE THE AUTHOR

Another late night reading Henry Wood Time & Again straight through when I should be concentrating on work. A real page-turner -- but I will fall asleep well-satisfied at 4:50 a.m. with the enjoyable time I had.

And, as promised by the author, this work was even better than Henry Wood Detective Agency; the proximate cause of the previous night's loss of sleep.

The author has a remarkable ability to capture your attention and never let it go. I found myself seamlessly transitioning into Henry's world after reading the first novel.

Forgive the generalities, but I do not want to go into too much detail lest I spoil your enjoyment of the book.

Forget what you think you know, because the author has something up his sleeve that will give you pause. The most intriguing part of the story is the interconnectedness of the plot elements, beyond happenstance, beyond coincidence, almost as if the actions were fated by a higher power. As you work your way through the chapters, the road is broad and the destination uncertain. A wheel within a wheel -- but when you turn the crank, something unexpected happens.

One more to go ... Henry Wood Perception (Henry Wood Detective series) before I start demanding another installment in this marvelous series.

Another sweet and gentle love story

Tarah is a teacher who has been in love with a neighbor boy since they were children... long before he left town to attend school to become a minister. When he returns from seminary and starts pastoring the local church, Tarah is less than pleased to discover that she is still in love with him because it seems as if all of his time is taken up with Louisa, her childhood rival.

The overly aggressive Louisa keeps pushing herself on Anthony and takes every opportunity to criticize Tarah and make snide comments about how she (Louisa) is going to marry Anthony. The only problem is that Anthony doesn't seem to know that she is going to marry him.

As in many other books, I am somewhat disgusted by the fact that Anthony does not seem to have the intestinal fortitude to tell Louisa straight up that he is not interested in her. I think it would have been kinder for him to let her know right up front that there is no way they would ever be a couple rather than allow her to browbeat him into doing things he doesn't really want to do, like attending various functions with her. Because he is not straightforward with her, she thinks that he has feelings for her when he really does not. I wondered how hard it would have been for him to tell her, "No, I'm sorry but I can't go to the picnic (or wherever) with you."

That issue aside, I loved this book and my primary complaint is that it was too short. I read it in a couple of hours...long before I was ready to say goodbye to the characters. I fell in love with the neglected and abused little children, Laney and Ben and it was with a great deal of pleasure that I ordered the next book that is about Laney. There are 4 books in this series but each is a standalone book and is about a different character. This is my idea of what a series should be. I highly recommend this book, and indeed any book in this series, to anyone who wants a "gentle" love story.

I really liked this book very much!! It may be short but it is a great story. I loved the way it all came together despite the obstacles. I would recommend it highly.

Lessons

I liked the author's lessons learned from life's twists and turns. We all have to learn them and this book just reminds me of the continued lessons always there throughout life. Learn them well so you don't have to repeat the same lessons over again.
I didn't care for how spineless the Preacher was but understand why the author showed that.
Let your yes be yes and your no mean no, helps avoid misunderstandings and gives other's less room for intimidation.
HEA achieved when characters put All in God's hands.
Excellent lessons learn from the book, not just passively read.
