Glen Williford lends new insight into the reasons for America s relatively quick comeback from the attack on Pearl Harbor. For the first time, he tells the complete story of American efforts to build and reinforce its Pacific garrisons in the Philippines and Hawaii during the six months prior to the war and to supply Bataan and Corregidor in early 1942. One effort involved a carefully organized convoy and air ferry routes that were reaching their heights in December 1941. The author fully describes the reinforcement efforts in the context of both the existing military strategies and the realities and physical limits of America s defense capabilities at the time. It concludes with an examination of the transition from the desperate defensive efforts to protect lines of communication to Australia and build a major base there to using these assets to resume the offensive.

A long overdue book
By Terry Sofian
I've been a student of the early campaigns in the Pacific (1941-June 1942) and had a great number of questions about US efforts to move troops into the theater before the war started. This book answers all the questions I had and than some. The narrative covers the high level thinking behind the troop movements. Why were some units sent? What was the rational behind the force mix? When and why did the USN begin to use convoys? The "rivet counting" isn't neglected though. What specific ships were involved and what specific cargoes? If you ever wanted to know how many 37mm anti tank guns were sent to the PI this book ill tell you, and will also let you know how much ammunition for those weapons was sent.
This book is a Godsend for historians of these early campaigns. Wargamers especially will be thankful for the detailed information on troop movements from the US to the Western Pacific. The book is well researched, extremely thorough and certainly worth both the price and the time it will take to read though it carefully. I was particularly facinated by the efforts to get chemical warfare units and chemical weapons into the PI to face the Japanese. 1,000 tons of mustard agent was loaded for shipment, although December 7th caused to cancellation of that mission. In all I had read of the build up of US forces in the PI I had never read a word about anything except defensive chemical units and equipment. Excellent find!
This book is exceelent in all regards. My only suggestions would be to include a set of tabular data for the various merchant ships (although most of that data is in various tables and text sections in the book), a timeline with total forces in theater at various times (including planned forces that did not arrive, and actual force structure post Decemebr 7th) would also have been useful, although again it would be easy enough for the reader to construct such tables themselves (I certainly will)

A subject that deserves better
By A. J. Del Calzo
The subject of this book is an important and interesting one that the author has clearly researched in depth. It is, however, poorly written. It is need of a good editing. The text appears to be a simple cobbling together of the author's research notes. It has paragraphs filled with backward running sentences - some on unrelated topics. All this makes the book as a whole difficult to read.

An invaluable addition to World War II military and naval history shelves, highly recommended
By Midwest Book Review
Racing the Sunrise: Reinforcing America's Pacific Outposts, 1941-1942 is a thoughtful analysis of America's historic comeback from the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Written by Glen Williford, co-founder of the Coast Defense Study Group (the only American historical society dedicated to the Coast Guard), Racing the Sunrise chronicles American efforts to rebuild its military presence in the Philippines and Hawaii, as well as the labor to supply Bataan and Corregidor in early 1942. Racing the Sunrise is also an acutely accurate reminder of the human cost to the immense work to counter the Japanese, and even discusses defensive efforts to guard lines of communication to Australia. A detailed and thorough accounting supplemented with notes, a bibliography, and an index, Racing the Sunrise is an invaluable addition to World War II military and naval history shelves, highly recommended.
