A Train on Fire and a Jewel Theft for Parker Pyne to solve!

Parker Pyne meets Elsie Jeffries by chance on a train. She has seen Parker's ad in the paper and thinks he might be able to help her. She discovers a message on her husband's writing blotter and think she might be in trouble. When the train is set on fire and her jewels are stolen, Parker thinks she's right. As Parker investigates he finds out more about Elsie and her husband than even Elsie knew.
I like this one for one reason. Parker Pyne confesses he's not a detective, but responsible for matters of human nature. It almost seems like he's out of his league with this one, but he does manage to solve this case.
I'm surprised that I like Parker Pyne now. When I read the first short story (The Case of the Middle Aged Wife) I didn't think much of him but he's really grown on me. He has none of Poirot's arrogance or Hasting's ineptitude and is a good detective, even if he thinks he isn't one!

Christie's Parker Pyne to the rescue

The story line is so mediocre that I've already forgotten it. Agatha Christie wrote quite a lot of stories that are not up to the standards for creativity that her readers expect from her. This is but one example. In general, I've found, the Parker Pyne plots do not challenge the reader, and the Parker Pyne characterization lacks dimension. He could have been a model for Dorothy Sayers' Lord Peter Wimsey, for both these sleuths are little more than well-dressed, highly intelligent stick figures.
