From the Author
This story contains bullying by staff at a retirement facility. As a teenager visiting my grandmother, and later visiting my mother who developed dementia, I only ever met kind, caring staff who looked after the residents at the resthomes where they spent their last years. The characters of Melanie and her daughter are entirely fictitious.

Lovely story!

Having had some experience of nursing homes and what kind of prisons they can be, I delved right into this short story and was not disappointed. The writer got the whole experience down to a tee, right down to the cheerfully plastic Melanie. This story has a voice that rings with empathy and humour. The descriptions were deliciously evocative and the characters were so vivid, I couldn't help drawing comparisons with people I've met in my own life. I think this short story does everything a good story should do and I would love to read more of this author's work. Five stars!

Poignant and funny!

Grandma doesn't see the need to retire to a nursing home despite the fact that she is feeding tea bags to her cat, Bella!
Under some pressure from her daughter, she goes to the nursing home but will not be staying. She is "just looking" to placate her insistent daughter. While waiting for her daughter to do some paperwork, she has reason to meet a few people and engage them in conversation. Slowly, she begins to see how it could be less than horrible.
I found this short read to be very entertaining. It was told in a manner that both made you feel sad on the one hand, but forced to laugh on the other. The author did a wonderful job of presenting this difficult situation with humor and compassion.
I found myself smiling at various points in the book as we took the journey through grandma's eyes from "definitely not" to "well, maybe"; I would definitely recommend this wonderful short story to all readers!

Hilarious, upliving, and true to life!

The old woman in this story is so atypical and true to life that she is hilarious. If you're looking for a clean book that looks on the brighter side of life, look no further. This lighthearted approach to the problems of the elderly will leave you smiling. Well worth your time.
