Excellent information

Articles are easy to read (no complex scientific jargon) and summarize the most up to date material on many aspects of healthy living. I have been reading various publications in this field for many years, and found that the authors of this book stayed away from fads, and gave sound reasons and evidence for the health practices that they recommended. Worthwhile reading for anyone determined to improve their own health.

… as the subtitle indicates: those are the essentials to healthy living. I recently read the compilation of articles produced by Scientific American on the Forever Young: The Science of Aging and felt these two collections went hand-in-hand, literally and figuratively. “Living Healthy” is a collection of 31 articles that were originally published in Scientific American, clustered around seven different topics. Those topics are: Diet, Food Supplements, Obesity, Diabetes, Addictions, Exercise, Mental Health.

One of the themes throughout these articles is the sheer difficulty of doing accurate research on any topic due to the large number of variables and coincidental factors in dealing with human research, and the fact that they cannot be controlled like laboratory animals. One article underscored this problem memorably: do yellow teeth, smelly clothes and a sedentary lifestyle cause lung cancer? Another article examined the origins of the admonition that one must drink eight glasses of water a day. This went back to a 1945 determination by the Food and Nutrition Board that a person should consume one milliliter of water for every calorie of food. But that determination completed OMITTED the fact that much of the needed daily water requirements is obtained IN the food we consume. And another article, which was repeated the message from the other collection, concerned how it became accepted wisdom that “anti-oxidants” were good.

No one needs to be a researcher or a scientist to realize that obesity has become a major problem over the last 30 years. I watched this occur in a developing country, Saudi Arabia, who went so quickly from a population of largely thin, wiry people used to a lifestyle of mobility and work, to a largely sedentary lifestyle, of fast food consumption, and even a distain for physical exercise. So, in terms of stimulating one’s thinking, I found W. Wayt Gibbs article: “Obesity: An Overblown Epidemic” a most useful counterpoint. For example, Gibbs quote the hype from former CDC Director Julie L. Gerberding, from 2003: “…if you looked at any epidemic – whether it’s influenza or plague from the Middle Ages – they are not as serious as the epidemic of obesity in terms of the health impact on our country and our society.” (An epidemic of influenza killed 40 million people worldwide between 1918 and 1919). Gibbs also indicates that the “obesity research community,” is often the flip-side of the research funded by soft drink manufacturers, one denying the problem of their product, the other exaggerating the problem, in order to inflate their stature and allow them to get more research grants. As there are “big bucks’ in encouraging soft drink consumption, there are also “big bucks” in the weight-loss industry, including surgeons and the pharmaceutical industry.

Also, I found Steve Mirsky’s interview with nutrition epidemiologist Barry Popkin particularly informative. In the span of a couple generations, humanity has gone from taken virtually no calories in their beverages (that is, water) to taking a fifth of their caloric intake in that manner. As to those who feel that government should not “interfere with the ‘free market’” the counterpoint is that there is no such things as a free market in regards to soft drinks, since, we are heavily subsidizing the sugar that goes into these products.

The last section was on mental health, and I found it to be the weakest. Although there was an entire previous section on addictions, like alcohol and prescription and non-prescription drugs, there was nary a mention to the passive “addiction” to TV and spectator sports.

Scientific American always provides a range of stimulating and rational articles on a given subject. Overall, for this collection, 4-stars.

Zizek and Media

Zizek is bewilderingly mischievous and insidiously provocative. Bouncing from Lacanian analysis to Hegelian dialectics, each/both of which are problematized from a Marxist point-of-view, Zizek punctuates this triptych of perspectives with a cacophony of popular culture (a la media). Zizek is extraordinarily playful, even toying with our most initimate of sensibilities. To be a "serious" Zizekian reader, you have to be prepared to ride the highs and lows of his intellectual carnival ride. I think Taylor has done an excellent job of critically reflecting the spirit and intent of Zizek's critique of media and popular culture in terms that makes Zizek's substance and style imminently comprehensible. If one is looking, as the earlier reviewer seems to have been doing, for a formal, systematic overview of Zizek, then I would take his recommendations to heart, and while such formal treatments have their place, I think it completely misses the acerbic zaniness of the Zizek experience. One has the sense that Taylor had as much fun writing this book as I suspect Zizek had in inciting it.

Boring and Life-less

I was surprised by this book! I didn't think a study into Zizek's work could be this boring. There's an energy and sense of playfulness to Zizek's work that I admire - but the writing is here by the author is so dull and lifeless, it's painful. For a look into Zizek better to go with the Pound or the Tony Myers book. I was just inspired to write this review after coming across a Zizek talk where I was listening to someone talk about a sense of humour with the spirit of a man trying to compose himself at a funeral... and then having the gut feeling that this might be the same author whose writing weighed down Zizek and the Media and it turns out it was. I do like the general gist of what is being said in both the book and the talk, and I don't need something to necessarily be entertaining - but somehow reading or listening to this guy has a depressing effect.

This volume explores the complexity of teacher-student relationships in secondary school settings and discusses how these largely unscripted relationships function for students and teachers in their learning and socioemotional development. For teachers, the relationships provide a foundation for pedagogical and curricular endeavors and lead to their increased investment in students’ growth, development, and academic success. Students who have such relationships feel more comfortable in their learning environments, interested in the material, and motivated to perform well. We discuss what these relationships look like from the perspectives of teacher and student. Teachers are often at a loss when attempting to draw appropriate boundaries in close relationships, and schools can and should help to provide guidelines, guidance, and even support for teachers willing to support students individually. We suggest formats for supporting teachers and look at a model for a whole school approach to working on students’ emotional challenges. We also provide a perspective from the world of after-school programs on how relationships with afterschool employees can be additional opportunities for mentorship and community. We hope that this volume will inspire discussion in educational settings and will be used
by schools that have embarked on or will embark on a journey of socioemotional development for their students and teachers in order to support students’ learning and success. Not very strict Paleo

Considering it was free it's ok, glad I didn't pay for it. While flipping through it I found a recipe and it called for Buckwheat flour, well that is on the list to avoid, and many beginners might not know it right off. Sad to say that people jump on the bandwagon and write a book really unaware of the simple rules of the diet. Maybe thats why the book was free? If you are considering this way of life for health or medical reasons do your research and find a different book that follows the guidelines.

The methods had the minimum of detail, and often seemed to be missing one or more steps. Not everything is strictly Paleo, the title is misleading. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone I know. Glad it was free.

Most vocal of the Cranberry Island residents is elderly Eleazar White, who insists that anything hauled from the ship belongs in Maine. Eleazar threatens treasure hunter Gerald McIntire with an antique cutlass only hours before Gerald's dead body is found floating at the wreck site. Natalie determines to prove Eleazar innocent of murder while planning her wedding and keeping peace among her feuding guests. One of the best cozies of 2010

It's been two years since the last installment of this mystery series was published and I have been anxiously awaiting this fourth one. I have checked on the author's website to find out when this would be available and was ecstatic when I found out another one was on its way. To immediately cut to the chase, it was well worth the wait.

The "Gray Whale Inn" mysteries are set on Cranberry Island, Maine and the focal point is the B&B on the island. With various guests arriving and departing and a host of interesting characters (though only 100 people actually live on the island), all the ingredients for an interesting and fun mystery are there. This installment finds Natalie with few guests at the inn until a ship wreck is discovered in the waters surrounding the island. Two different, competing teams of marine archeologists arrive to try to claim the wreck and to determine exactly which ship they have found since there appear to be two possibilities. When a dead body is discovered and a local man is arrested for the murder, Natalie is in the thick of things in trying to clear his name as well as handling the tensions of the two competitive archeological teams.

This has to be one of the best cozies of the year. The book is well-written with a nice range of characters and a wonderful setting. One of the strengths of the narrative is the setting of Maine itself and the author does a masterful job of utilizing the setting without it overpowering the mystery. To further strengthen this effort, the story actually has believability which is often lacking in this genre.

For anyone who enjoys an island setting, the state of Maine, B&Bs, and an interesting mystery, you can't go wrong here. I hope I don't have to wait two more years for the next book, but am glad that quality is more important than quantity in this series.

There are 2 versions of this book, I unknowingly ordered the smaller and less informative version. No way to figure that out before as they have the same title.

Eating High Off Th Bale...Easiest, most enjoyable garden ever

I saw the photos my wife's cousin posted on Facebook last year and was impressed with the healthy abundance of pesticide-free produce in a small space and tried it this year. I've never had an easier, more productive garden. My two-bale garden looks like Eden, with four pepper varieties, four tomato varieties, one zucchini, and one lemon cucumber...all in the space of nine feet!

The plants are large, luxuriously foliated, and productive...loaded with produce. I'll never garden any other way. And a huge bonus is its resistance to snails and slugs, which don't like climbing across the straw. We've always fought a constant war with them and it's never been certain that we would win. But this year it's completely different...no war and no worries!

Prepping the bales is a simple, ten-day process...sprinkle some fertilizer on the bales and water it in. Buy the book to get the details because the different nitrogen ratios prep the bales and turn them into high-grade growing medium.

This method is so simple, effective, and productive that the old phrase "Eating high off the hog" might just turn into "Eating high off the bale".

Bought this book for my sister and she cannot wait to try it next spring. She loves the book and has
had several people interested in looking at it. They are all waiting to see what kind of results she gets
with this style of gardening. Can't wait to see it myself!
