A Must Read!

People have always had a morbid love affair with horrific crimes and great tragedy; the sinking of the Titanic, the Hindenburg, Lizzie Borden, Jack the Ripper. The mention of any one of these events sends us rushing to hear the latest theory, or any new evidence to the mystery.
Discovering Wm. J. Perring's two volume novel "The Seduction of Mary Kelly", Jack the Ripper's final victim, had the same effect on me. Incredibly well written, the book makes you feel you are right there with Mary, experiencing alongside her the life of a Welsh mining village - and later, the much darker and more desolate streets of London's most shameful past.
This is not a book to be read to cure your melancholia, but it is a fantastic read for anyone who loves to take a long sojourn into a past world of love and danger.
How Mr. Perring manages to capture this beautiful love story - the honor and bravery of people at their ropes end; the kindnesses in piles of human rubbish; the fear as a butchering murderer stalks their streets - is a testament to his brilliant story telling. Half way through the book I was looking for my Dramamine as each twist and turn came fast and furious. I would recommend this book as a great adventure.

Must be made into a film!

Last evening I watched, "How Green Was My Valley," on TCM. This film won five academy awards in 1941 and was picked as one of the "essentials" by guest co-host Drew Barrymore (not one of my favorites) and Robert Osborne (the best!) I enjoyed the film, but not having read the book, felt as if it was just a tiny slice of Huw's life. What astounded me was that "The Seduction of Mary Kelly: Final Victim of Jack the Ripper," by English author William Perring starts out with an even more poignant description of life in the small mining village of Nant-y-Pridd in Wales during the late 1800's. Mr. Perring's book follows Mary's life from her village to Cardiff, and then to London. The first part is probably equal to "How Green Was My Valley," (which I promise to read,) but the work contains small books within books of stories that will make your head spin. Although I am not a fan of who-dun-its or cliff-hangers, I did not read this book in search of those aspects. The quality of writing, the depth of character, the keen ability to portray the pathos as well as beauty and joy of life, are the gifts of this work. Mary's delicate, haunting portrait on the cover was also done by the author. Call me obsessed and crazy, but I am on my fifth read of this historical-fiction novel and am discovering nuances I missed on earlier reads. When things get to be more than Mary can bear, Mr. Perring's dry humor helps lighten the load.Joe, for example, a poor soul in Mary's life, is one of the funniest characters I've met. For those readers who still love actual books, purchase the hard-cover edition so it can become a proud, stand-up member of your library.

Great Novel with a cliff hanger

A surprisingly good novel about the "last" victim of Jack the Ripper. Creating a fictionalized life about Mary Kelly, you read about her life before she became the latest victim. I thought the novel was great although of course I was disappointed about the cliff hanger ending. A great plot with unforgettable characters. I felt as if I knew more about Mary Kelly which made her murder even the more tragic.
