Spineward Sectors Series Book Three of Eight: Admiral's Tribulation

Admiral Jason Montagne and the crew of the Lucky Clover are back just in time for another family reunion. The last one was with the Vekna side of his family, but now he has to catch up with an an old school Montagne... the kind that gives other Montagnes a bad name, and makes Jason's relationship with Cousin Bethany seem all warm and fuzzy, by comparison.

Childhood fantasies will be crushed.

An aura of invincibility will be tested.

It's anyone’s guess if the Little Admiral can pull another rabbit out of his hat and put an end to the piracy that’s been plaguing the border of known space ever since the Empire withdrew.

Will the tables finally be turned? Will Jason find himself at the mercy of those he’s been thumbing his nose at for so long, or will his paranoia protect him from an honest-to-Murphy Admiral's Tribulation?

Out of the frying pan and into the fire!
By Paul W. Millsted
This book took me by surprise that's for sure, not what I expecting at all, but that's not a bad thing! Who wants to read a predictable novel?

Anyway Admiral's Tribulation is a somewhat darker story than the first two entries into the Spineward Sectors Series with some pretty grim scenes and is for the main told from the Point of View's of just about everybody except Jason Montagne the 'Little Admiral' who until now has been our main protagonist; also of note in this story "Anyone Can Die." has been turned up to 10 and applied with wild abandon! So this is really a different animal when compared to Admiral Who and Admiral's Gambit.

The Politics of the universe are exposed and explored a little more and darn is it a murky and cut-throat game with just about everything we thought we knew from the earlier books turned on its head.

I don't want to give too much away but all in all this is a high tempo story once the action starts, tightly written with some great competent villains. Not a lot of the ship to ship naval type battles we've seen, much more focused on boarding actions.

Finishing the last book my musings were more focused on what Jason and his allies could be doing to rebuild the Confederation Navy, setting up an Academy, recruiting people both skilled/retirees and trainees from all those border worlds and so on, sure the attack on the pirate base was going to be a big deal but . . . that's not what this book is about.

Here we have the story of an operation going pretty badly wrong and everybody going above and beyond trying to salvage something from the rubble and its very well told IMHO tears, terror and triumph! . . . although the triumph is more about skin of the teeth survival than any big gains.

Criticisms . . . ok Jason in the beginning of the book was particularly weak and ineffectual I thought, a sharp right turn from his normal MO, ignoring some pretty obvious warnings and clues that things were'n't exactly what they looked like and shouting and scoring points when he should have been listening and planning. Sure a lot of it he thought he couldn't do anything about but even so this was not Jason Montagne at his best.

The same can be said about Jason's XO/CoS, although in Tremblay's case I can forgive him a little since he was so desperate to believe he was finally being rescued from his royalist hell and welcomed back into the bosom of parliamentary service that he glossed over a lot of the warning signs I guess.

This was a great book one that I'm sure to read again and again I also have high hopes for Jason bringing his A game back for the next book, the snippet of Admiral's Trial at the end is pretty hardcore.

Operation gone wrong, Traitors aboard, A lovely montagne reunion.

Read, and re-read and here's my opinion.

I have to admit that when I finished the book, I was surprised. It wasn't the same as the previous books and as the events unfold, Jason acted quite different compared to first 2 books. Not necessarily bad thing though, cant have the same thing over and over, it only grows stale then.
So, how can I decide on what grade to give this book?
As the previous books hooked me up and focused more on the major characters and in my opinion is the Best Space Opera books I've ever read, this book was more action-based while at same time fleshing out more minor characters. On my second reading of the book while taking it slower, I realized that this is what the series needed. Everyone who have read the previous books would have known it could never last, that sometime the luck would turn around, and that is what we see in this book.
I'm going to decide the verdict for the book according to the following:
Pro:
- Fleshed out characters, but not taking half a book to do so.
- Not a boring moment, ever. Never did I skip a single page.
- Proper wording, no sentences that made no sense.
- The feelings the book leaves you with after reading it.
- The fact I re-read it the next day.
- High temp, great actual competent villains.
- More action/initiative from Trembley. (No stale characters)
- Ending the book, leaving you thinking of what "What could I have done if I was in the shoes of someone in there?" "What will happen now?"
Cons:
- Jason not being quite himself as the previous books, not as paranoid nor being as involved in the affairs that unfold.
- Focusing a bit to much on the minor characters while not quite as much on the main one. (However, it must be taken into consideration that this book was originally with the next book that comes out, a monster book, both books into one. However being released as two different books)
- Bethany `disappeared', she got sent to the brig, then what? Been assured she will appear in next book though.

Conclusion: No of the Cons is a book breaker, the only major impact one of the cons had on the book was the first one. However, all the Pro's easily uplift the book.
Verdict: 4,5 stars out of possible 5.
I must say, the Spinewards Sector Novel is the Best Space Opera on Amazon!

Does not disappoint! Awsome!
By jojwoodruff
I have read and reread it and cannot wait for the next one. Joshua has not disappointed me yet, he can spin a tale as breathtaking as the last without missing a beat. If you have read the last two, you know what I mean. Joshua is becoming a legend in his own time and, like Terry Brooks, I am constantly checking back for the next delivery. The action and drama keep you at the edge of your seat and this is not a book you want to read to fall asleep, I have read his books all night and this one is no different. You go My Deposed King! And get back to work!
