A good chance for parents to speak to their children about how we treat people...

After reading this version I read the classic version. The classic fable seeks to explain cognitive dissonance to children. The Fox, at the end of the tale, expresses disgust for the grapes which is contrary to his core belief which is that the grapes are soft and sweet. The re-telling stays mostly true to the original story. There is one element that is really bothersome to this reader and that is the ending.
There seems to be a trend toward cruelty in children's media today. Instead of learning from the actions of the fox, the squirrel and mouse laugh and ridicule him. The Fox slinks off humiliated and ashamed. Turn on any live action Disney program today and you'll see the same sort of activity. Children whose backstories would have us believing that they're friends shaming each other. There's always that really dumb friend that everyone ridicules because nature didn't make them as clever as their friends. In the case of the fox, nature didn't make him tall enough to get the grapes. I understand that to stay true to the fable, the Fox wouldn't get the grapes but I see the further humiliation as unnecessary. What is that teaching our children? What is it teaching them if we give them a book where animals follow another animal and then cheer for his failure? I picture young children at the end of the tale closing the book and chuckling about the "stupid fox" while completely missing the spirit of the lesson.
The illustrations in "The Fox and the Grapes" are beautifully done with a classic feel. I would recommend this story for young children but also recommend that parents talk to their children when they finish not only about the moral but about the unintended secondary lesson.

Cute but not so great.

The fox and the grapes is a cute book. I love the illustrations, they are just adorable.
However, it really fell short from what I expected. Especially since it is Kite Readers.
The cover, gorgeous illustration, leads you to believe the book has a happy ending right? Right, well, you would be wrong.
Anyone else but me thinking WHAT!?!
Who ends a book with a character going away sad and ashamed with the rest of the characters laughing at him? Great book for kids.. not.
If your child is sensitive to things like this and prone to feel bad for the animal that's left out this is not the book for that child. Unless maybe you want to encourage them to write another story that helps cheer up the animal left out and hopefully themselves.
Even still, I would suggest another book, before that.
The book started of okay, the story was good, and again the pictures were great. Bright, colourful and cheery even.
It's a shame it ends so badly.
I'm giving it two stars for the illustrations. As much as we like the illustrations, this is one we won't be reading again.

Fox is out taking a stroll through the forest. Soon Fox will be hungry. But, what should he eat? He encounters a squirrel sitting on a branch ready to enjoy a tasty nut. He offers to share but Fox refuses to eat something so hard, turns up his nose and walks away. He continues his stroll and sees a mouse chomping on a root. Mouse offers to share but Fox again refuses to eat something he thinks is very bitter. Fox continues on and sees a farm. He smells sweet, soft and juicy grapes. Fox jumps and jumps but can't reach the grapes hanging on the branch. The squirrel and the mouse laugh at him. Will Fox ever get something to eat? You'll have to read the story to see.
This classic tale has been reinvented with colorful illustrations. Children will love sharing this fun tale and laugh at fox as he snubs his nose. Parents can open up dialogue about embracing our differences and to try things before we judge someones tastes.
