Dancing With the Virgins is an atmospheric, psychological stunner—perfect for fans of Ian Rankin and Peter Robinson.

As winter closes in on the moors, so does death. The body of a young woman is found within a ring of ancient cairns, her arms and legs arranged to look as though she's dancing.

Now another young woman has been found, savagely wounded and severely traumatized, but alive. Ben Cooper and Diane Fry must unlock the memories trapped inside her mind before more blood is shed amongst the stones . . .

From Publishers Weekly
After an atmospheric beginning, Booth settles down to a lengthy investigation marked by long stretches of unrelieved tedium in his second crime novel (after 2000's Black Dog). On Ringham Moor, in a remote area of England, a prehistoric ring of stones known as the Nine Virgins stands guardian over mankind's darkest secrets. To this lonely area comes Jenny Weston, a young cyclist. Entranced by the scenery's eerie ambience, Jenny doesn't hear the stealthy approach of a silent stalker, knife at the ready, who graphically dispatches her and artfully arranges her body to simulate a woman dancing. The killing seems singularly motiveless, and Diane Fry and Ben Cooper, the detectives assigned to the case, are an odd couple: Fry is a feminist and Cooper a beer-drinking sports enthusiast with a taste for records from the '80s. When they discover that another woman, Maggie Crew, was attacked by a knife-wielding assailant not half a mile from Ringham Moor, the plot appears to thicken. Unfortunately, the tone of the investigation is so matter-of-fact that the mystery fails to grip. Moreover, the characters are opaque, often one-dimensional, and the ultimate revelation of the murderer comes as a distinct anticlimax. The author seems more concerned with a welter of subplots, one involving a farmer running a dog-fighting ring and his bˆte noire, an animal rights activist intent on mayhem. Booth is more successful at evoking the desolate moor, with its windswept cairns, stone circles and prehistoric burial grounds. But for most mystery fans, the mix will fail to gel. From Library Journal
Back after last year's well-received debut, Black Dog, Booth provides another psychologically complex British police procedural featuring Detective Constable Ben Cooper. When the body of Jenny Weston is found, displayed as if she were dancing, at the ancient site of the Nine Virgins stone circle, police suspect the same person who attacked and brutally disfigured Maggie Crew on the same Derbyshire moor just weeks earlier. But eight weeks and another nonfatal attack later, they are no closer to solving the crime, despite a list of possible suspects that includes a burglar with a potential personal grievance, a bad-tempered farmer driven to desperate means to survive economically, a well-respected park ranger who is found to like child pornography, and Jenny's ex-husband. Acting Detective Sergeant Diane Fry, a former partner of Cooper who got the promotion that seemed destined for him, can't jog Maggie's memories of her assailant. And Cooper must contend with his prickly relationship with Fry and his basic loyalty and humanity, as he sees victims where others see only suspects and shades of gray where others see black and white. Booth ought to be popular wherever Barbara Vine and Minette Walters have a following; for all such mystery collections. Michele Leber, Fairfax Cty. P.L., VA

From Booklist
Ringham Moor, in northern England's Peak District, is home to a Bronze Age ring of stones known as the Nine Virgins. Park rangers patrol the moor, filled with ancient burial mounds, to protect the sites and the hikers and cyclists who sometimes lose their way. This mystery, the successor to Booth's widely acclaimed Black Dog [BKL S 15 00], takes off when a ranger finds a young woman's corpse in the middle of the Nine Virgins--her body positioned in a grotesque mimicry of dancing. Derbyshire detectives Ben Cooper and Diane Fry, who share an intriguingly acerbic relationship, eventually link the murder to the disfigurement of a woman at another ritual site. The portrayal of this woman, a once-prominent attorney whose life and self-confidence have been slashed, along with her face, is deeply affecting. She is also vital to the case but won't talk for fear her attacker will return. Her fears are justified. Clockwork suspense in a riveting setting. Connie Fletcher

Dark and Disturbed
By Untouchable
The Peak District is a beautiful part of the world. Haunting, dark and mysterious. It's a tourist attraction that lures thousands every year. But it has also been used as a killing ground. A girl is found dead at a group of rocks known as The Nine Virgins. Even more disturbing is that it appears that her body has been arranged to look as though she is dancing.
This is Stephen Booth's second book following on from Black Dog, and revisits Ben Cooper and Diane Fry. Apart from the mystery, this books concentrates on delving deeper into the characters introduced in the first book. The relationship between Ben and Diane is continually developed, as are the secrets they appear to be hiding. At some points, the murder case takes a secondary role to the characterisations. Because of this character development, I would recommend reading Black Dog before this book.
It takes a while to really get going, as with many police investigations, but pretty soon things start coming together. A nicely woven mystery is unravelled with a few surprises, both pleasant and unpleasant, revealed along the way.
The setting of the book is once again a powerful factor in setting the mood of the story, which is not what I would term upbeat. It always feels dangerous, dark and menacing - just like a good murder mystery should.

Didn't hold my interest as the first book in the series did
By Cathy G. Cole
First Line: On the day the first woman died, Mark Roper had radio trouble.

In a remote area of the Peaks District in England, a prehistoric ring of stones called the Nine Virgins witnesses the brutal murder of a young cyclist. When Detective Constable Ben Cooper and Detective Sergeant Diane Fry learn that another woman was attacked by an assailant with a knife less than half a mile from the Nine Virgins, they feel they've found the start of a pattern that needs to be stopped immediately.

After enjoying the first book in the series, Black Dog, I expected to settle down to another good read, and Dancing With the Virgins did start well. Author Stephen Booth is a master of the atmospheric setting of the Peaks District-- making it appear both beautiful and menacing-- and his two main characters are finely drawn. However, I had several major problems with this book.

Those very same main characters that I'm getting to know so well are rubbing my fur the wrong way. Diane Fry is the Queen of Not-Letting-Anyone-Get-Close. She realizes this but doesn't know what to do about it... or if she even wants to do anything about it. She's so prickly that, no matter what anyone does, they put their foot in it. I may understand some of her motivations, but after a while prickly gets old, and I begin to wish that she could remain civil to everyone for one entire hour.

Ben Cooper, on the other hand, is the opposite of Diane Fry. Where Diane Fry sees black or white, everything is in shades of grey to Ben Cooper. He has a difficult time saying no to anyone and seems to want to be all things to all people. As a result, he seems frozen in place at times.

The pacing of the book was glacial and came very close to being a Did Not Finish for me. The first substantive clue for the main murder occurred on page 380 of a 528-page book. The culprits for this were the many subplots that sucked all the life out of the investigation into the murder of the cyclist. Besides the murder, there were plot threads involving child pornography, illegal dog fighting, a corrupt cop, two young homeless men camped out in a broken-down van, domestic violence, a young park ranger learning the ropes... and others. If there'd been fewer subplots, I think things would've moved a bit faster and the book would've held my interest.

As it stands, Dancing With the Virgins just didn't work for me. I do have the third book in the series here, and I will read it. But it will be a while before I pick it up.

Masterful blend of police procedural, suspense and folklore
By Maine Colonial
Stephen Booth began the Ben Cooper/Diane Fry series in 2000, with Black Dog, which won the Barry Award for Best British Crime Novel. His followup, Dancing With the Virgins, published the following year, also won the award.

Booth sets his series in the Peak District in the north of England; a place that can sometimes be wildly, stunningly beautiful, and other times dark, haunting and even menacing. Ben Cooper was born here, knows everybody around and understands the land and its ways.

Ben, following his father's footsteps, has become a policeman. He's a Detective Constable on the Edendale force, who hoped to be promoted to Detective Sergeant. He has seemingly lost that competition, though, to Diane Fry, a southerner who is none too happy to have been transferred to the remote north, but she is determined to succeed here at whatever cost. There is sparking tension between Cooper and Fry that arises from both attraction and competition.

Cooper and Fry each have their haunting demons, as well, which brings more depth to the story. Ben worries that he can never live up to his father's heroism and that he may fall prey to the mental illness that struck his mother. Fry has suffered some terrible experiences both at home and in her previous assignment, and would rather close herself off from all feeling than go through the pain of recovery.

After the pair's stunning debut, Dancing With the Virgins is just as gripping and atmospheric. In the Peak District National Park, there is an ancient circle of nine monoliths, which legend says represent nine virgins who were turned to stone in punishment for dancing. A young woman has been found murdered in the center of the circle and, what is even more disturbing, there are indications that this may be one of a series of killings.

With no forensic evidence to go on, the investigative team must cast their net wide, which dredges up a number of subplots involving a whole host of unsavory situations, including homelessness, child pornography, domestic violence and more. There are several interesting characters involved in these subplots, and even some breaks of welcome humor, but some readers may prefer a more streamlined plot.

The Cooper/Fry series is an intriguing blend of police procedural, psychological suspense, exploration of contemporary social issues and celebration of nature and folklore. What's more, Booth has a lush, atmospheric writing style that makes his long, character-driven books a pleasure to read. As the series goes on, I will say that Fry's never-ending animosity toward everyone, especially Ben, can be wearing. But these early books in the series, starting with Black Dog and then Dancing With the Virgins, make for masterful storytelling.
